I am a bit over a month old Eve player. Could someone explain, what has happened here? I have no clue about politics, but this seems to be so big that it really interests me.
What was bob? what happened to it? Why is it so Epic? What do the speculations of missed billing mean?
So, I bet it would help a lot of new players, if someone explained it all as you would explain it to a newbie.
Thanks in advance!

BoB were one of the biggest player alliances in EvE. They've been at war with Goonswarm for years.
Last night one man destroyed the entire alliance. A true hero.
I'm thinking a movie needs to be made by Uwe Boll about this. |

They realised they could make more isk per hour by running level 4 missions in empire, so they disbanded and intel suggests that they will join NPC corps so that they are immune from wars.

hard to explain to a newbie, really. a bob member with director access took (corp theft) all kind of stuff from various bob hangars (caps, normal ships, fuel, etc.) while doing this - or better while thinking about doing this they had the idea to disband the whole alliance (sovereignity will reset), which means, docking rights, jump bridges, standings, everything screws up making bob, ex-bob, very vulnerable.
so basically, bob lost a lot of ISK, their sov and their ally name. it's thrilling to see what bob makes out of it. will the re-unite and kick ass, will they surrender due to the spying. time will tell... ------ |

BoB and Goonswarm were in war for ages, Goonswarm managed to infiltrate BoB leadership to make one of their directors closing the alliance Band of Brothers. That means they lost pretty much everything, especially sovereigntys, stations, capital production, well ... lots. The war between Goons and Bobbits just ended by one mouse click of an (Ex-)BoB director.
this link might explain the size of this a bit better for new players and why it¦s kind of "epic":

It took a single bob member to do in one night what goons have failed to do by force of arms over the corse of the entire conflict.
The moral of the story is, if you cant do it yourself get someone else to do it for you.

As everyone is so fond of real world analogy's in the eve forums let me start my post by saying; The decline of BOB was much like the fall of the Roman Empire, it was a death of a thousands cuts. Here is my hopefully newbie friendly version of events (From my own admittedly biased and limited point of view). Part 1: I joined eve in June 2007, events before I joined (from my understanding) went like this BOB steam rolls ASCN, MC BOB's ally steam rolls the north, Goon's steamroll Lotka Voltera.
BOB were widely regarded as the strongest alliance in eve and as a simple newbie I was always being told by other "vets" how great BOB were, how they were this unbeatable force who had never lost a cap battle etc etc. The only people willing to stand up to BOB and who refused to accept all the hurf blurf going that BOB were unbeatable were the "misfits" of eve, Goonswarm and Red Alliance. This is where I joined the game.
BOB's decline as the "power alliance" in eve all started when BOB left their vassals (Pets) hanging out to dry in front of the RSF southern offensive in 2007 (someone can probably list all these pets, Rise and Fix were the most well known). BOB had a huge number of Blue entities that paid rent to live in the space of 'almighty' the BOB. This was afaik space conquered from ASCN. The number of alliances aligned to the "BOB side" and to the "Goon side" were roughly equal if not in BOB's favor at the start of the war. RSF (goons, red alliance and TCF), the 3 major enemies of BOB basically began to steam roll these Pets. At first BOB helped defend, but then a Titan belonging to Shrike blew up and this was basically the turning point of the war. BoB became less and less willing to help their pets and many died with BOB barely lifting a finger to help, how much of the ease of RSF's victories was due to the ineptitude of the pet alliances pvp talent is debatable.
Seeing the momentum switching from BOB to RSF a number of previous third party alliances or alliances with only a minor interests in the conflict joined the RSF side, which then became known as the coalition. In a desperate bid to bolster their numbers BOB began recruiting pvpers from their pet alliances and even absorbed a whole corp (Fin Fleet), many claim this destroyed BOB's reputation as being an alliance full of elite pvpers. This reputation was further harmed when BOB entered the 4th alliance tournament as firm favorites (having won the 3 previous tournaments) with a setup, which they arrogantly and loudly boasted on a number of different forums as being ôunbeatableö. BOB was steam rolled in the tournaments semi finals by Star Fraction (a small role playing alliance). At this point most people realized the days of BOB being an ôeliteö unbeatable pvp alliance were a thing of the past and their reputations didnÆt hold much water.
In late 2007 realizing their pets were basically incompetent and there was little they could do to halt the advance of the coalition BOB abandoned region after region to RSF without a fight. Their strongest ally (MC, who turned out to be one of the biggest paper tigers in Eve) sensed the tides of power were changing and turned against BOB. At the same time a newly regenerated north (who had just finished booting out a number of BOB aligned alliances installed by the MC), joined up with the coalition to hit Delve (BOB's home)
After many months of intense fighting BOB were able to hold off the delve invasion to a standstill, some will argue it was a well organised defense some will argue they only won due to the attrition levels of the invaders who got so burned out by lag and shooting pos's and titan defended cyno generators they lost interest in logging in, whatever it was by early 2008 delve invasion had failed to kill BOB (at best it can be said invasion ended in stalemate with neither side having a clear advantage). |

Part 2: Goons went off to shoot SMASH in drone regions, TCF went back to Curse, RA split into a few factions, those interested in drone regions formed xxdeathxx, solar * etc and the remaining corps stayed as RA(some RA corps would eventually join AAA). BOB were given a reprieve and a chance to rebuild, they would go on the offensive once more.
The MAX campaign was launched (it including a New York Times article). BOB headed north expecting to steam roll it as MC had done in 2007. At first they did have success capturing Pure Blind, Fade, Deklian in reasonably quick succession. They reached a wall when it came to Tribute and it cost them dearly, they lost a number of decisive cap battles (some say the largest seen in eve) and another 2 titans. BOBÆs reputation was in tatters. Reading leaked BOB forum messages from the MAX campaign it is easy to see how demoralized BOB members were to eventually become after failing to beat whom they consider ônorthern carebearsö.
In what could be seen as a desperate gambit to save face BOB withdrew from north to fight goons (in the process aligning themselves with former long term enemy AAA and the tattered remains of the formed MC, a move that allegedly made several long time BOB members quite upset). BOB again expected to steam role the Goons, who were suffering from low participation and were being assaulted on multiple fronts.
Jan 2009 saw fierce fighting in the southern regions, with BOB / AAA pulling out all stops including using a director level spy to offline towers in an attempt to disrupt a goon sovereignty 4 system but again failed to beat Goon and their allies (which now included the NC out for revenge after MAX campaign). It is worth noting that BOB seemed reluctant to deploy cap ships in large engagements like those seen in the Max campaign, perhaps they were afraid of repeating the large capital losses they took in the North.
Whatever the reason by Feb 2009 BOB were a shade of their former ægloryÆ, they were now a bloated alliance of some 3,000 plus members (in fact they were the second largest alliance in eve, something they failed to comprehend when whining about being out numbered), they were a vastly different alliance from the former æeliteÆ pvp alliance they once claimed to be.
To quote another meme during æA Day that will live in infamyÆ a high level BOB director defected to Goonswarm and ruthlessly dismantled BOB from the inside. Who knows what heÆs motivations were, perhaps he was a ôsleeperö agent placed by Goons long ago waiting for the optimal time to strike, more likely though it was a long time BOB veteran fed up with the direction BOB was headed and the repeated failures theyÆd been a part of during 2008, who finally put a terminally ill BOB out of itÆs misery.
Who knows what will happen now, will BOB corps reform a new alliance, will they go back to being the small elite alliance they once were, or will they curl up and die to be left as a footnote in the pages of Eve history, as they say time will tell.
wow that turned into an essay post, hope that gives you some insight. |

Couple of corrections and expansions as I see them. In the dawn of my eve career, when BoB moved south towards Delve they were considered the good guys. My knowledge about those times are scatchy at best, so if someone would expand that earlier war, I'd be glad. Sometimes during that time though the Bob-Goon enimity came into existent, when Bob tried unsuccesfully to kill off Goonswarm, which moved to another region. Several achievements like the first titan kill in eve was accomplished with spies by Bob.
MC got steamrolled by Bob shortly after switching sides. Or perhaps by Bob reputations, as there weren't really that many battles in the few days MC lived until it went down.
xxdeathxx and solar already existed when their numbers grew due to people leaving RA. Connections between these alliances existed for a while (it was rumored xxdeathxx was an alliance made up of alts of RA for example).
Now we face the interesting question, if Bob will fold totally, overcome by internal bickering, or actually be able to turn around again and rebuild. Or as a third option let Bob rest in peace, and go their seperate ways...

According to an audio recording put out by Goonswarm, they were approached by a BoB member who had Director roles in the alliance holding corp. First, he gave logins and passwords to various BoB forums, upon which Goons began archiving EVERYTHING. He handed over to Goons over a dozen fitted capital ships, gobs of pos fuel, equipment, and other ships. These assets happened to be primarily in npc stations for some reason, meaning it would be child's play for Goons to get their hands on these assets.
The biggest blow in my opinion, was removing every corporation from the alliance. This means that sovereignty has been lost everywhere, resulting in greatly increased pos fueling costs, the 'abortion' of motherships and titans currently in production, the offlining of cynojammers, cynogenerators, and jump bridges, and the temporary loss of standings and docking rights. In short, the worst logistics nightmare imaginable. Add to all this that BoB space is some of the nicest real estate in EVE, and you can see why everyone and their mother will be trying to take a piece.
I miss anything? |
