Lately forced pvp has taken a bit of a hit. QR boosted agility to the point where a quad sensor boosted phobos is basically the only way to catch anything smaller than a BC at a low or high sec gate. Though this can be dealt with through the massively boosted HIC, it's lame and often not an option. This has left many of us reliant upon scan probes to locate victims in SS's and missions. As pretty much anyone who has used probes knows, recon probes are broken and have been for quite some time. They are incapable of detecting even the largest ships in a deadspace site (nearly all missions) consistently and thus few people use them. Instead the exploration probes are used as they are many times stronger at the expense of range and speed. These have a good chance of hitting a large target like a BS and a reasonable chance with anything cruiser and up. They just take ages to do it and that's the trade off.
However, the next addition to eve will split the scan probes further. A stated feature is that exploration probes will be incapable of detecting ships. This will leave us with only the broken recon probes. If this occurs, I and my buddies will be stuck ganking random noob thorax's ratting in belts in low sec. Though I do that regularly, it isn't exactly what us pirate types are looking for. It's a little too much like beating up the npc rats in the belts which is what we're trying to avoid in the first place. I hope that recons will be fixed (and that damn agility buff removed) but I suspect neither will occur.
It seems overall that eve is shifting very heavily in favor of PvE players and the PvE content sucks. That's the whole reason many of us switched to PvP of some sort. Go here, kill 30 npcs, come back and do it while afk for 3/4th's of it is not worth $15 a month. I switched to piracy after about 4-5 months because the pve content simply became so boring that it was a choir to do it. It stopped being a game at that point and I nearly quit but chose instead to explore other game aspects.
On the bright side we will get better rats, maybe better targets will jump into low sec to go ratting. Kinda doubt it though.

Actually it's correct grammar and not a wall of text, it's written in complete sentences and paragraphs. I know, how horrifying. Also a shameless bump due to the 200 BoB threads that moved it to page 3 without much of a look.

Should be no choke points in space.
Forcing pvp away from gates and towards having to scan down opponents is the right direction.
Scanning needs to be fixed ill agree, they are changing it so lets see how well it works out.

They are annoying and not very streamlined. Like the drone interface tbh. Both need to be fixed somehow. |

The problem with recon probes is the snoop has around a 5% chance of a hit on a dominix or it's drones in a deadspace sight with 5 ogre's out. Yeah the probe time is 30 seconds with my skills as opposed to 180 seconds with exploration probes but that still makes a quest probe far more effective since it has around a 90% hit probability. For the mathematically challenged, that's a 30% hit chance over 3 minutes vs 90%.
One problem I see here is the process of searching for a specific target rather than tossing a large net and going for whatever. Low sec typically has no more than 1 mission runner in any given system and even that's rare. In high sec you have 100 people running missions simultaneously. If you are ninja salvaging, recons are fine as it doesn't matter which BS you probe out. In low sec, there is only 1 target and you have 10 minutes to find and tackle him before he finishes the mission and you have to wait 3 hours for the next one.
Getting fighting off gates/stations is a good idea I think, but that requires a lot more work on CCP's part as they would have to make low sec risks actually worth the rewards. Something along the lines of moving all lvl3 and 4 agents to low sec or tossing 1M isk BS rats out in 0.4 sec system is pretty much the only way to do it. The addition of BS rats to low sec in the next update is good I think, I don't expect them in my home system but even a few BC rats would draw some more people out of high sec.
From a RP perspective, one does have to wonder why the faction navies would chase 1 blinky red human cruiser all over system but completely ignore that 20 BS sansha fleet. Just a thought on it. |

I've been too busy with school and work to go PvPing much lately but I probed down a Vexor in Low Sec Verge Vendor last week at a mission site. Hit it on the first scan with a snoop probe, navigated through a labyrinth of wrecks to within 5km of the guy in a cloaked Helios, called in the damage dealers and that was that. Good times.
But out of hundreds of probe and ship scans made since I moved out there that's the only guy I know for sure was at a mission. |
