What is the advantage of an Orca over a Command Ship for a mining leader? From what I can see the Orca replaces the need for a transport ship whereas the Command Ship can provide defense for the miners if necessary.
Am I thinking about right?

3% per level to mining link effectiveness is a good start. Also the orca has enough room for a set of medium and light drones so if you are in empire or low sec that will be moar than sufficient firepower.

Ah yes, I've been off a while and forgot the command ships have bonuses to specific command links, not general ones. That is a good bonus.

And how do you store 5 medium and 5 light drones in 25 m3 dronebay ? -----------------------------------------------

Orca has a 75m3 drone bay, with 50m3 drone bandwidth. Try not to be so insufferably smart next time, you might not come across as a complete idiot.

There's also that thing about the Orca being expandable up to like 130,000 m3 (92,000 cargo with rigs, and 40,000 corp bay) and having a 70km range tractor beam, so you can hold all the ore you are mining in the orca, and a hauler can continually empty the orca from the corp bay, so there should be no need to defend the miners, since there are no cans for anyone to steal.
Unless you plan to be mining in low or null sec, but then if you get jumped in low or null sec I dont see how one CS and some hulks are going to stave off a pvp gang. |

Yes of course it will. Orcas have me shivering in my boots when I see them on scan in lowsec..
Or maybe that's excitement |

You actually have me wondering why I never put mediums in the bay in the first place.
All this time I have been flying around with 5 lights I was convinced that was the ships capacity. -----------------------------------------------

Depends where, and what they are flying...
But the orca has more benefits than just the link: It's a flying GSC for one, mine tends to have 5 light armor, 5 medium combat drones. It can be a nice support ship with a salvager/tractor/optimization link set up in high (no range or cap ganglink)
they also are nice ships for moving stuff around.. since they can move rigged ships and their belongings from one mining base to the next
