Just a thought - why not create a chance of making ships capturable?
When a ship has taken enough damage, you could get the option to 'blow out' the pod (thus detatching the pod from the ship without podding the pilot). To add to the difficulty of capturing a ship, instead of just targeting the pod section and having done with it, there could be a major chance of ship destruction anyway. Maybe make a skill, +5% chance to avoid ship destruction per level, or something like that.
Rough idea I've got would be something like this:
* Normal fight between two ships. [*]One ship takes damage to hull. [*]Attacking ship gains option to target the pod section. [*]Attacking ship is successful in knocking out the pod. [*]Defeated ship is intact but heavily damaged, floating in space as an abandoned ship would be.
All that would have to happen after that is to have another pod come along and board the ship.
Pirate ransoms would still happen - there is after all no guarantee that they'll successfully get the ship.
What d'you think? |

Can you imagine the amount of high sec ganks this would cause
Why just not make all the space .0 and be done with it

No. While I think a ship capture would be awsome. It should work differently in my opinion and be horrendously hard.
1. Obviously it shouldn't be possible in highsec. 2. It should require a specilized ship for the role of capturing. 3. It should require "soldiers" "freedom fighters" "etc." as ammo for capturing. 4. The ship to be captured should be in "hull" before this becomes possible. 5. The larger the ship the more troops needed to capture the ship. And the longer it takes. 6. Should take considerable ammount of time and capture ships within 3k range of the enemy ship. 7. Super capitals should be immune to it. (eg. Motherships, Titans.) 8. Would add a way for pirating to be truely profitable.
I am not suggesting that this be implemented. But if it were to be, then this is how I'd propose it be done. |

Edited by: Kassa Daisho on 08/02/2009 04:40:17 I'm going to have to give this idea a thumbs-down. Anything like this that significantly reduces ship loss rates would require rebalancing everything in EVE to make up for the decreased demand for new ships and there's no real improvement to EVE combat, you just make pirating more profitable with no tradeoff and no really new twist to combat other than they get an X% chance to eject a target's pod instead of blowing up his/her ship.
Anyway, I'd doubt that it could be programmed under the current game engine the way you describe it.

And even when they dont, you usually dont have another player just hanging around in his pod nearby, ready to jump in and grab the ship. Another thing. Whats stopping the pilot who just was forced out of his ship to just jump back into his ship? And besides those things, i dont ever think this would be implemented. With the immense fortune you can build up in no time, all moneysinks that exist are required. |

I'll bet it'll be possible to capture ships by coaxing the victim out of it when the insurance changes are brought in

This is fairly offtopic, but you spiked my interest. What are these changes you mentioned? Any dev post on this? |

Edited by: Kahega Amielden on 08/02/2009 07:27:23 No specifics. They mentioned that they were looking at overhauling the insurance system and it would be implemented as soon as they find a working model that they liked. Right now, with the current insurance system, ejecting means you lose insurance, thus making it pointless...in addition to a number of other gameplay issues.
No dev post for this, though. I think it's in that big QA thread Zulupark did awhile back. |

It can be nice, but need way more work. It should be viable if targeting subsystems will be introduced imho: destroy at least all the weapons, engines and offending stuff and then you can try to initiate the capturing maneuver.

i love the idea of bording action, but it does seam like a hard thing to balence, like the t3's sp lose, ppl will eject before ship pops, but will targeting ships be able to stop the death(lose of pilot hp's,and response time).don't think you will see anything like this till ship crews are in game, witch could be years.
now i would not use specialized ships, but a high slot mod that ancores to a ships hul and opens the hull, and the 2 ship crews fight, pilots of the 2 ships can divert as many of there crew to the fight, but lose functions for the lost crew, and self destruct will air out both ships, so you will have to be fast and sure.the risk will be high, but reward high as well.fast detach will cost ships crew, but help in avoiding ship loss. but not any thing to get worked up over for long time, but plz do think on it dev's

Make abandoned ships tractorable. I heard abandoning a T3 ship before it explodes will prevent the skill-loss normally associated with it, so there might actually be situations where a "capture" might be possible.

i thought about that too but for capitals... there could be a "conquerer" ship class. after a capital taking hull damage down to 10% you can go close by and start a "conquering" device to take it over... there should be a chance and a cycle time for the device. the "conquerer" ship should be easy to destroy but quite quick maybe like a shuttle. hangars for frighters asset and map |
