I take it, then, that you've personally always said "no" when some State entity or other had an inconvenient DED informer they wanted you to rub out? And if you believe that the fact that it's a State entity directing you takes the sting out of it, you might consider that the primary distinction between the Empires and the "pirate civilizations" on the fringe is that the Empires are signatories to the Yulai Convention and accordingly work with, and in some degree under ... the DED.
We're assassins, Mr. Grayson. Murder is our business, whether we serve the Empires or the pirate factions; we take care of "problems." We do their dirty work. Even collecting the bounties the DED offers on vessels belonging to organizations it deems "illegal" boils down to contract killing.
The primary difference, from this angle, between you, me, and Verin is which entities we've worked for. In the final analysis, the moral content differs very little.
And, maybe you're right-- maybe none of us deserve the title of "citizen."
The trap of definitions.
Is the soldier defending his nation an assassin, a murderer, a killer? Yes all these things to his enemies but to his friends and family he is a hero and defender. It is a matter of perception.
Grayson-haan's perception and his background make Hakatain-haan a murderer by Grayson-haan's definitions.

And from my perspective, those Home Guard ships were firing on a ship containing my family and several friends, on top of the absolute certainty that defeat would mean stepping out of a CRU and straight into a shock prod.
I do not regret killing those people - they died well and honourably. I do regret that I was forced to kill them.
The State agrees with my perspective, and all of the deaths I caused during my flight from the State are considered to have been in self-defence. If Mr. Grayson takes issue with that decision, then may I suggest that it would be better for him to put his money where his mouth is and take it to a legal affairs board.

I'd agree with you faster, Nederland-haan, if I thought what we combat pilots held much in common with "soldiers."
Still, you're not wrong. I suppose what it really comes down to is that Mr. Grayson's attitude strikes me as ... thoughtless-- thoughtless in every sense of the word, and consequently deserving of a swift kick to whatever spot on that solid Civire skull of his might generate some introspection.

CEP issued the pardon, and it is a final decision between the megacorporations on this particular subject. The rest is emotions and feelings and I'm sure has no place in the business agreement's pardon or our honour to abide.
Hakatain-haan is a Citizen unless he is disassociated or does that to himself again.
I'm sure that Hakatain-Haan knows that the road to become a good citizen is hard, but also understands that becoming a good citizen *again* is even harder.
It would be against tradition to deny Hakatain-Haan the opportunity given bij the megacorporations to experience the State's benefits again. We should not deny him the opportunity to contribute to the State's profitability or security, like we would not deny any other citizen.
I know some of you will be suprised to hear it from me, but if the State ... no, even when the State requires it, I'll have his wing, regardless of my political views or my opinion of his summit's statements.

I wonder if you regret the deaths of the crewmen of the ships you pirated. If I were inclined to 'put my money were my mouth is' concerning you, I'm sure I would get more value from a Mordu's explosive expert.

Moot question. Despite flying in a few hunts during my brief time with Veto, I was never actually involved in the destruction of a single ship during my time with them. Not for lack of trying, I confess, but in the end I left Veto with my CONCORD security index unchanged.
So, I'm grateful that it's not a regret I have to feel. - Verin "Stitcher" Hakatain. |
