Im looking at training one of these two skills - im interested in increasing the damage of my sentry drones And my question is this: Do sentry drones count as Heavy Drones? If i can train heavy drones V and increase the damage of my heavy drones and my sentry drones then im going for that - otherwise it's straight to sentry drones V. Thanks for any/all input.

Sentry drones do not count as heavy drones
I highly reccomend using t2 sentries for PVE. Unless you are ratting/missioning against angels then they are pretty ineffective.

I hate to hijack this thread but, what is better for gang pvp, sentries or heavies? |

Go with heavies, they have alot more uses in PvE (where I believe them to be superior...gotta loot those wrecks anyways, so sentry-time-saving is moot) and are definitely the prefered choice for most pvp activities.
For small gangs, heavies are going to be a better choice 60% of the time. Often times you have Ewar modules or weapons that need to get closer to the enemy, but your sentries are fixed in location, forcing you to retrieve them. Their tracking is lower than heavies, so they may have difficulty tracking a cruiser at a gatecamp, whereas a heavy can keep pace. They also have lower DPS than their heavy brethren.
Sentries definitely have their uses (2days 2 hours for my V to finish) but its more limited to fleet work or specialty drone boats and special tactics. ----------------- Friends Forever |

For PvE, with a Domi, Sentries are very good, use Warden II from 100km down to 20km, under 20km switch to either Garde II (if you have a Omi fitted) or drop Heavies out.
The flight time of Heavies negates the slightly lower DPS Of sentries when using them at range.
For PvP, it really is situation dependant, but if you are a Domi ir Ish pilot, take both. |

Sentries save time for those of us who don't loot while in their mission ship... or don't loot at all |

sentry drones are acutally the ****, if you intend on flying an ishtar and dont know whether to go heavies or sentries... train sentries.. they'll give you a lot more options "SPEED + GANK = SPANK... Spank that ***** up" |

Think on this - sentry drone interfacing V gives you access to all 4 races T2 sentry drones.
Heavy drone interfacing does not give you access to all 4 races of T2 heavy drones.

hmmmmm... why are sentries good.. well a few points would be..
Firstly, sentries are just like turrets so you can tap stuff from a distance, and take down some frigates in a volly or so. Secondly, You can pull them in Instantly if they take agro, heck you can even sit there and RR them. Third, You can make use of a sentry dmg rig. and still fit 2 cap rigs, on a dominix, this gives sentries more base dps over hevs
Despite the nay say'er telling you time saving sentries don't save you time..
Well that depends specifically on your style of play.. If per say you had a marauder fit and rigged for savaging following a pair of dominix's so letting the chips(wrecks) fall where they may, hardly matters to someone in that situation..
Personally, I like to control where things die, as most rats are on approach too you I like to kill them all before they get in X range, which usually puts all the wrecks in a general area.
It's more likely a heavy drone setup will take longer to kill everything(even operating the heavies in the most optimal fashion {sending them to the next closest target, minimizing their travel time thus time between firing}) which will mean you'd have wrecks all over the place.
I've lost heavies due to them pulling agro on a trigger bs that orbits at 51km and TWO of them couldn't make it home with a drone speed rig and drone navi 5
But.. even with drone Durability 5 /i've lost sentries by just not watching their health bars.
and one more thing.. sentries are great for pvp, although once again, situational.
but you're bound to loose if you aren't picking your fights anyways.

I'm new to using sentries and wondering if the Omnidirectional Tracking Links are doing anything. When I Show Info on a turret or something, I can see bonuses from my skills and other mods like tracking computers or weapon upgrades. I don't see any increase in the tracking of sentries when I deploy them and check in the same way.

I don't think you see a change on regular drones either

I will vouch for the effectiveness of Omni tracking links. I'm not aware of a way to confirm a change on paper (like show info-ing on something to see the effect) but if you rat for an extended period of time without the omni link and then switch to 2 or 3 links, you definitely see an improvement. ---

domi(bs lvl 5 for best results) + 2 omni links + garde II = a zone of pure rat ownage from 10 to 40 km . imo :)
personally, in missions i use sentry drones more often than heavies just because it is much easier to keep them safe and they do not fly to some random location aggroing various stuff which i REALLY did not want to come after me. heavies are only good for stuff that comes under 10-15 km to your ship. easpecially when you expect more rats to spawn. send a heavy drone 40 km away, see some random frigate rat lose aggro on you and say goodbye to your drone :(

My dronebay with berserker IIs and Bouncer IIs says otherwise. Bouncer are great for incoming ships with angel like exp hole and the few that survive are easy prey to the berserkers.

Ooh, you're in empire.
Ah..gotchya. Yea I rat in 00. So, missions = sentry, 00 = heavies.
The drops in 00 are soo much better that you really do need to loot and using a looting ship isnt as practical eitehr.
Honestly, I throw some drone speeds rigs on my ratting dominix and see my Wasps zip around at 2km/s. I also use 4 blasters, so I'm closing to 20km anyways. |

Check the drone stats in EFT, it will show the stats with skills and the omni-links included. Also, Omni-links don't suffer any stacking penalties, so with 2, your garde II's will murder anything in quite a wide radius. |

Actually Omnidirs DO suffer stacking penalties (they didn't when they were introduced but somewhere along the way it was 'fixed'. But the stacking penalty on the second item in a stack is negligible and the one on the third still bearable, so I usually try to go with three Omnidirs, or 2 and a drone scop chip, to really squeeze the last ounce of range out of Garde IIs. And if you are reading this, you have arrived at the signature without noticing...
