And why? I've heard people say pulses are better. I'm curious as to why. In a smaller ship, like Frigate-class, I can see why... But why on something above a Cruiser? Seems the closer range to small targets on missions would be nothing more then a headache then picking them off from a range.
Or is the Tracking on a Pulse good enough for even Medium turrets to hit Frigates? |

Alot of time its personal preference and situation.
Pulse=Close Range, Higher DPS, Better Tracking Beams=Long Range
Also t2 Pulse has scorch crystals where as t2 beams have crap.. Also fitting pulses are alot easier then beams. |

Medium ships should fit pulse all the way, HPL and FMP both have very nice range flexibility due to scorch and generally being awesome. Med sized beams are kinda meh, okay if you PVE, but even then I'd go with pulse every time(23km scorch vs 54km aurora and for a respectable dps drop). Tracking is good enough that pulsing your MWD is generally enough to hit a frig with T1/faction crystals in(or just drone them to death in PVE).
Beams(tachyons are love) are definately useful, but only if you need to engage at range, as you have to sacrifice some major fitting to use them(at least one RCU to fit tachs on any battleship w/max skill).
When I run l4s in my absolution(strictly blood and sansha, mind), I use pulse and just burn good shots on scorch until things close into MF/UV/whatever range they orbit at. Beams work, and quite well, but I like the killing power of pulse, personally.

Pulse are PVP weapons. I guess they can work on lvl1 missions where everything closes to short range anyway and they definitely work well on lvl4 missions when you can jump in an abaddon/apoc/paladin and get 45-60km optimal with scorch.
for PVE though I'd definitely fit beams all the way.
The tracking on pulse is good enough to hit pretty much anything as long as it's suitably far away. __________________________________

Shameless bump, im also curious about this, not sure what to train for, pulse or beam T2. Let the pros and cons flow! Drones... drones...drones! |

Train for both. The vast bulk of training for T2 guns come in the support skills (which you'll want to V anyway) and the base turret skill to V.
But very well, let's go through the pros and cons: Short version: The same as the pros and cons are for the other two gun systems
Long version: Pulse: + DPS + Tracking + Fitting + Cap use - Range
Beams: - DPS - Tracking - Fitting - Cap use + Range
I'm sure someone's going to pop in with "but beams have more alpha," which is incorrect - Pulse and Beams of the same class have the same damage modifier and hence the same alpha strike; the only thing contributing to their DPS difference is that pulse fire faster.
As for the question: which one should I use? PVE: Beams, generally. Exception: Large T2 pulse lasers, because 45km optimal with Scorch L is acceptable range for level 4 missions. PVP: Pulse, unless you're sniping, generally. Beams are very hard to fit on PVP ships (very high grid and cpu requirements) alongside useful things like a MWD and a plate. Additionally, beams have only one advantage over pulse - range - which is largely nullified because in general pulse lasers + scorch give you all the range you need. |

I've done missions for the Amarr Navy for about 6-7 months before i've got bored and moved on to something else. All that time i used both beams and pulse lasers. In the end i must say pulse lasers are better since i was soloing L4 missions faster in a pulse lasers fitted absolution then in a beam lasers fitted AN Apocalypse....and it was more fun
