Is putting up a small POS to mine cobalt worth it?
I mean with defenses or would the cost not cover the profit?

You're unlikely to even cover fuel expenses with cobalt, it's practically worthless and only mined by people that already have a POS they have to have, to offset their costs.

Caesium?
I am just curious as what is worth moon mining besides the obvious dyspo/promethium stuff. |

Mercury, Cadmium, technetium (if you're mining this - convo me - you'll have a buyer) will not only pay for the fuel but pay for your investment quickly (for mercury, about 2 weeks for a small tower and bits)
If your doing it right, a mercury moon will make atm over 400mil a month, but good luck finding one...

There has to be a way. I mean if no one mines Cobalt because it is not worth it, then the demand for cobalt would go up right? Which would make it worth it. Sorry for the noobness. Just trying to understand things better.

It's because cobalt is needed to create crystalline alloy. |

This really.. Most people that mine it are either mining it because they need the POS there anyway, and a small offset is better than none, or because they also mine something it reacts with..

Exactly. The real profit in moon mining anything less than an R32 lies with reactions. If you can run a full set of reactors, it's worth the effort. Otherwise, it'll take you a while to break even.

To expand - moon mining is a flawed market. To understand how it *really* works you need to look at two very important points:
1 - The bulk of low-end moon minerals (less than r32) are mined only because there is already a tower there. The tower may be erected for Sov holding, logistical, or research purposes. The point is the tower wasn't placed with moon mining as its purpose. The owners have no plans to use the minerals, they're just mined as a way to offset a portion of the upkeep. This leads to massive oversupply and prices that are far far below their intended value.
2 - r8 and r16 minerals are locked into a 1:1 ratio by their respective reactions. This means that only as much of an r8 is needed as there are r16 moons. This leads to r16 moons not being worth beans, and being ignored.
The obvious exceptions are any minerals used in the dyspro chain.
See this site for a bit more details Moon reactions explained. The text info isn't the most up to date, but the reaction tables are spot on. |

If they are mining something more valuable that can be reacted with cobalt to make a simple material, they could throw up the reactor POS on a cobalt moon (they're common) to simultaneously mine the cobalt and run the reaction. It's the other moon that's worth more, but in this case the player saves himself the cost of operating what would be a third POS by killing two birds in one stone.
