This should be included on every ship, like an SOS. So that if a character is in real trouble, perhaps with pirates, he can activate his distress beacon, in hopes of reaching a well meaning player.
Effectively, this would best be implemented as if the player in distress had targeted everyone in the solarsystem, but he would be flashing green or something to indicate that he is not hostile. Anyone receiving this could then warp straight to his location and help if so inclined.
Anyay, just floating an idea that I think would increase 'realism'. (how many startrek episodes began with the enterprise responding to a distress beacon :)

Oh yes, I can see many people using this distress beacon once, maybe twice, until a player pirate comes along and helps the npc's to blow up and then loot the player who used it.
Call me a cynic >=)

I think this is a good idea, after all you run the risk of being attacked by player pirates anytime you mine anyway, plus it will be good to help out the newer players _______________________________________________ Ahaahhhh you didn't count on my loyal army of Prostitutes did you? |

Great idea.
Fair enough it might attract oppertunistic players looking to take advantage, but you would only use it as a last resort anyway.
It should take the form of a small flashing icon in the corner, which when clicked has a "warp to", and a "communicate with" popup.
Though it should be active only in the local star system.

ehhh, lets see now, you get a green flaring blob and well meening you head out into unguarded space only to find ... ITS A TRAP!
Them blasted pirates (har har) has activated a beacon in order to get ppl to come to them.
Its the oldest trick in the book, litteraly.
And if you want it to be 0.0 and better sec rating to get it to flare green... well did I hear second char from someone in the back of the room?

Fester, man. Nothing is perfect, but it would give some folks a last resort. And realisticlly a starship would have one. Regular naval vessels are all equipped with them.

I think that really depends on the difference in the class of ships and weapons being used by attacker adn defender. That was one of my concerns as well.

IŠm not saying that this couldnŠt be abused, in fact it would be one of itŠs merits, "is it a trap? or isnŠt it?" is a nice dilemma.
Just like you can go into an alley and scream bloody murder, and then mug anyone brave enough to go to the rescue.
Like I said, it would add realism.
