Yes, accounts of stockbrokers jumping out of windows after the 1929 stock market crash are most likely apocryphal. There is little evidence anyone did. There will have been suicides later, one famous man shot himself in a hotel room, but nothing spectacular happened at the time.
I second the theory of eroded social cohesion. Values have changed. We are a less trusting, more individualistic society than existed in the 1930s, in spirit if not in means. There are positives and negatives in this. We are far less likely to rally behind a unifying structure and show deference to leaders. This may result in reduced prevalence of authoritarianism and greater social dysfunction this time round.

Meh. Greed is a constant; I don't see any particular impetus added over the past 10 years to make it suddenly cause an economic meltdown.
I didn't say it was a cause, merely a barrier to the solution that saved the economy in the 30's depression. That solution will not happen this time because everyone thinks only of themselves now.
However, greed has been partly to blame. Companies putting prices up by 30% (British Gas Etc), politicians and other highly paid people getting huge increases of 25% or more in their salaries and so on and then making redundancies to allow profits to pay their wages. Just one of these pay rises would pay my salary for 5 years and I'm only talking about the amount of their latest salary increase, not their entire salary.
High unemployment does a lot to damage the economy, less people with money to spend means less revenue for retailers. That causes a ripple through the whole chain until every company starts to feel the pinch. When a huge company like Woolworths goes under, there has to be something seriously wrong with the economy. That's when I start to believe that we are not being given the whole story by the gov't, someone is hiding the real figures and trying to play it down.
Hmmm... We have an election looming on the horizon and I really think Labour is playing down the real problem in the forlorn hope that they can win it. I don't even need to guess who will be voted in next time, I already know. Brits have such a short memory that they can't recall why Conservative were voted out last time, they are too focussed on voting out Labour this time even though both have proved many times in the past that they can't do the job.

did it occur to you that the reason why nothing changes for the better and politicians lie to you is cause the democracy you thought they represent doesn't exist?..
the true democracy where representatives bowed to the will of the people instead of trying to manipulate them, wasn't there to begin with.. it has never failed because it was never there to be tested.
and now you got spin doctors, "advisors" and "think tanks" manipulating the few politicians that doesn't realize it's a democracy and that all the "experts" are put there by the controllers.. and the other politicians take their orders directly..
not to mention.. idiot kids being produced out of the school system that a) think they're geniouses cause they can answer yes and no checkmark test exams..
and b) know nothing about the value of democracy, their rights nor the value thereof.. and are being taught it is awesome to live in a tyrranny because it's "more efficient" that way.. and being taught to spy on their parents and brainwashed by the global warming maniacs and so forth..
i wonder how when the rulers do not like you and you are sent to a camp how you will elaborate to the soldiers taking you there.. that this is awesome because things are just so much more efficient this way...
