Well, I downloaded the full gig update to the 77718 build. My eve updates have almost never worked from within EVE, so I manually patched....and.....it worked!
The game loaded, splash screen up, login was successful. There are a TON of gfx glitches with white screening near planets, gate billboards are really messed up, but talking with another corp mate who was online using the windows client, he is seeing the EXACT SAME GLITCHES, so at this point anyway, it DOES work, but its extremely 'beta' at this point.
Hopefully as we roll toward 3-10-09, we can use this thread to give feedback and such.
Also, my install took the default shader model HI settings via premium, and seemed to work just fine (as far as it goes). More testing and reporting later, but I wanted to at least say that this build does install and work.

This thread in the Game Dev forum shows what CCP is listing as "known" issues. As wine is not supported by CCP please do NOT respond in there. I link it for informational purposes so we understand which bugs are game related and can determine what is specfically related to wine.
If you see a bug and its listed in that thread, there is no sense in repeating the problem here.
We need to see information that can be attributed to problems with WINE and EVE that we can pass on via bug reports to wine.org.
Here's the link: Known bugs with SISI Client

Running with released wine 1.1.14 compiled from source (not git) ubuntu 8.10 nvidia 8800gts with the pre-release 188.27 drivers. (these include a full opengl 3.0 implementation that nvidia just released via the nvforums boards.)
More futzing about. Shadows are still an issue. i.e. turn em off and leave em' off. HDR seemed okay, scene 2 had the same buggy wackiness reported by ccp and win users.
Although I got some white screening issues with shader 3 + hdr + scene2, swinging the camera away from planets or the dreaded billboard at the gates seemed to return the normal gfx just fine.
I have not crashed a single time while testing at this point.
I do see much lower fps in stations, and some real 'jaggies' in fps in space, but these tend to occur with the billboards as well as some gfx anomalies with planets. Overall fps seems fairly decent even with sm3.0 high.
Switching from sm2 > sm3 gives a strange look to the game until a scene change which refreshes and gives proper colors.
So far, this is an "alpha" client imho, but I'm very impressed with wine + eve stability at this point from a lack of crashing perspective.
This is with running compiz as well. fps are higher with metacity.

Version 6.10.77718 /wine 1.1.14
I'm not sure this build is worth reporting bugs on tbh. GD section has tons of gfx issues and such with scene2 that I'm seeing variants on with wine as well.
If I turn off scene 2, we get what looks like traditional trinity "premium" with a few additional lighting effects. roids appear to be the old models.
Turning on scene2 gives strange fps spikes, planets that glow like the sun, rings around planets not occluded by the planets, billboards 10x to large (and white outs when near them.
Changing shader models requires a restart. (it works, but strange artifacting occurs without a restart.)
The one constant at this point is that the client doesn't crash. I've yet to ctd with this build regardless of gfx issues.
Sound...in and out. Odd delays in space.
Oh, and no matter what I do, no warp tunnel effects whatsoever. (scene2 on OR off).
I'm gonna wait for the next build before reporting anything else. This actually feels like an "alpha" rather than "beta" in some ways.
My opinion: the new ship fitting screen....blows ass. Sorry, just goofy looking and terribly unintuitive. The old screen, while somewhat clunky in ways....was CLEAR as to slots/loadouts and info.
I doubt CCP is looking at this thread, but if you are....sometimes cute(r) doesn't mean bette(r). mkay?

Per the work arounds, make sure that under the scene2 stuff, you have the dust fields UNCHECKED. It is a known issue causing lockups and gfx problems.
If that ain't it, then you need to dump cache or reinstall. (I'm not having problems docking with scene2 enabled or disabled, but if I check dust fields, then my client locks like a vault.)

I just updated to the 6.10.80627 build. No issues with white screens or gate billboards any longer.
Big issue here (but not a show stopper) is that sound isn't working. at all. either with padsp and oss or straight up with alsa. The pulseaudio volume manager DOES show an alsa stream for EVE when the game is running, and the game seems to think that there is audio as well, but nothing happens. (no jukebox/warp sounds/etc.) That is different from the last build which had audio, but cut in/n/out.
Shadows still need to be turned off or you get the wierd artifacting and invisible ship syndrome. The "dust field" and "scene 2" selections are no longer present.
Frame rate in space is over 10fps higher now for me, with about 10fps LOWER in stations. (scratching head--but still overall fps is slightly higher than with tranquility.) average 42-45fps in space, 38-50 gates, 35-50 asteroid fields and 38-45fps in stations.
I haven't had time to look at all the threads in the game dev section, so is it just me, or are they altering the warp tunnel effect to be more like the fx that cap ships produce? (lightening sparkles and such.) There is also a new leave system bubble bursting deal when jumping through gates that caught me off guard, but was pretty nifty as well.
I've got all display and graphics settings as such: hdr enabled bloom enabled ui shader quality=high ui texture quality=high
As the notes indicated that caching is automatic to shader settings, I've left that unchecked, and am not noticing any real degradation in playability or fps.
Other than just a bit of hitching during session changes, this is getting very playable. The fitting screen, while I don't like it, is at least more tolerable at this point as its easily moved and the sides can be collapsed inward. Interesting in a visual way how the ship inside the dial of the fitting screen can be moved about just like the real ship. I still don't like the layout, but its not "done" yet, so we shall see.
I haven't done any looking/testing regarding tech3 stuff as I a. don't have the time right now, and b. I haven't trained those specific skills yet. I should get going on this as I am a cap ship pilot so it probably won't be a long train. The new skill queue is a lonnnng time overdue. VERY cool stuff there.
I'm overall impressed even with the glitches. Oh and the asteroid fields are definitely improved over the last couple builds gfx wise as well. smoother fps when in and around them.

I have the exact same problem, Station background is complete black (was just grey a few releases ago), no models at all are displayed in space (except planets).
Ubuntu 8.10 wine-1.1.15 nvidia 180.29 drivers (updated from the repository ones, cause I hoped it will fix the problem) Nvidia 6600 GT graphic card
Same problem, and same software/drivers with a nVidia 7900GS
Really odd. Have you tried to back down to the last stable nvidia drivers to see if there is a difference? This almost sounds like a regression issue. (Awhile back nvidia 6x and 7x users were having major issues with gfx and EVE while the 8x and 9x users were seeing no problems.)
I'm using the 180.29 drivers with an nvidia 8800GTS with (in general) the same wine and ubuntu system and am having no gfx issues at this point that I'm aware of. (stations/roids/gates and even the new billboards are working fine here.)
Also as another check, move the shader model selections to medium or even low and try with those settings to see if it resolves the problem. If not, this might be worth sending nvidia a poke about (via nvforums) as it might not be EVE or Wine at fault here, rather the video drivers themselves.

I wish I could help with this, but I can't. My 8800GTS exhibits none of those issues with the current SISI build.
SISI is down right now, but this screenshot shows the selections I'm using in the escape menu. With the 8800gts as previously mentioned, I'm having none of the issues you are seeing with the 6x,7x cards.

I would bet that Merende's output of the patcher is the same as my fail, as it gets to a certain point and "strobes" as well. (I didn't invoke it from the command line, so didn't get the errors.)

Originally by: Gilbert T I am unable to patch for the test server ATM. I am using wine 1.1.12 on Gentoo AMD64 with nvidia-drivers 177.82 and an old mesa library i may update later today.
The patch downloads fine, and then comes up to "downloading" and flickers a lot. It downloads some files and then deletes them and sits there doing nothing. I ran wireshark and determined that it was downloading http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/test/EVEPREMIUM.5.20.75883-6.10.81170_TEST.RTP so now I'm downloading it with wget instead. Anybody have any idea what to do with it now? Or, perhaps another solution?
This has been mentioned in the apoc thread in the game dev forum. Some people (not just us) are having issues with the patcher. The solution is simple. download the patcher manually via the link in the thread. download the RTP file manually via the link in the thread.
make sure you have the updated VB dll stuff mentioned in this forum. Then, with the patcher and the RTP file in the SAME DIRECTORY, you run the patcher. It will find the RTP file after you give it the directory you wish to update and it will run.

As I reported in the game dev forum for the 81762 Build on SISI: <snip> From ze woild of wine: rig: amd x2 3800 dualcore nvidia 8800gts nvidia 180.35 STABLE (new drivers) ubuntu 8.10 wine 1.1.15
Game loads just as expected. New settings under gfx section of menu work (but opt for quality enables shadows which do not work well under wine at this point.)
the f10 map is working better now and does NOT blank out the screen after toggling. flatten/unflatten still not working properly.
New warping effects = getting mucho better!
No sound as of yet, but again, this may be a sisi upgrade issue as reports indicate that a TQ > SISI upgrade sounds seem to work. (?)
Asteroid fields look good. (hdr tweaking again? they are a bit brighter than last build.) frame rate in belts still appears decent.
New turret effects (minnie) look really good as well.
ship fitting...either I'm getting a bit more used to it, or there have been some tweaks. looking better.
onboard scanner = not working again.
memory usage seems stable as well at this point under wine, and approaching gates/stations/belts the hitching as scenes loaded has improved drastically as well.
No t3 or probing stuff to report at this point, but two thumbs for stuff that is improving. (map especially.)

using 1.1.15 from source to answer the wine version question.
And.....I'm not seeing acceleration gates either. (8800gts.) There is also some serious flashing near a mission gate with objects around it. I've seen a few complaints about gfx from windows side users, so this might not be a wine issue.

(also posted to game dev forum):
From the woild o' wine which was just updated to 1.1.16 today:
Just did a TQ > SISI update and sound DOES work...sorta'. It functions, but is still slightly choppy, and weapons/missles sounds as well as warp/engines sometimes work...and sometimes not. Jukebox plays tunes, but again, there is a bit of choppiness to the output. Doesn't seem to effect fps on or off.
warp acceleration gates are invisible and there is a flashing of color (brown) around mission areas that reminds me of 2 or 3 builds ago around gate billboards and some planetary bodies.
Map works...better. flatten map flattens the systems horizontally however, which sorta' defeats the purpose. No more black screens.
wine 1.1.16 ubuntu 8.10 amd x2 3800 dualcore nvidia 8800GTS nvidia 180.35 drivers pulseaudio using OSS emulation (padsp prefix)
guessing tomorrow is another build, so more from the woild o' wine + linux after that happens. o7

I missed this before my last post, was this a hint that there is a way to get the installer to function now? A link please, anyone?
This thread: Apoc patches first post. There are two sections of patchers "Patches for xxxx". Those patchers are inclusive of the exe and the rtp file and internally unzip and run. I've tested em', and they work without a hitch as there is no bits download necessary. Just fyi.

The f10 map shows the stars.....as chunky squares. zoomed in or out. (which I suppose is better than not visible at all, eh?) zoom in/out works, flatten/unflatten appear to be functioning as they should.
warp acceleration gates are still not visible in deadspace areas, but I see no other gfx anomalies beside that at this point.
fps is slightly better in stations at this point.
views if yer interested: f10 map view via wine wine in station view
wine no accel gfx view
addition: draco, you only need one or the other for alsa/oss, but you CAN have them both enabled...but I wouldn't as it simplifies things when troubleshooting.

There are three pages in this thread currently and there ARE probe issues being mentioned. My suggestion is to report the 'glitches' you are encountering THERE without reporting platform. It is VERY probable that the probe issues aren't related to platform at all.
In fact I'm seeing issues being reported for windows that we AREN'T seeing under wine, or to a lesser extent in some cases.
My take on it anyway. beta beta beta. Updated Ubuntu Compiz-Linux Desktop+EVE Premium |

Oh. man. This is getting mucho better. The listed issues I'm reading are the same as our issues as far as I can tell.
1. Sounds = wow. This is sooo much better sounding than the old EVE.
2. Starmap = flatten/unflatten/toggle = works just fine. (The probes now, different story, but its a known issue.)
3. Framerate = way better. I'm getting 55-65fps in normal areas, and even showing improvements to in station.
4. gate effects/sounds. three thumbs up.
There are bugs....but so far, from the "wine" perspective, this is so far an amazing progression of builds which has me thinking, that barring some odd flakiness in the next week and a half, that we will be fully in business on the wine side of things.
If CCP is watching these threads, bravo....and this seems to me more than just a "smoke test" as each of these builds has started and launched...which is better than its ever been since I've been playing EVE with linux.
The patcher...well, at least you are providing the "all-in-one" which works perfectly. The BITS patcher, it fails nearly instantly when attempting to go get the RTP. It isn't flickering and hanging any longer, at least on this system, but is useless for downloads.

Problem in detail: I can launch the probes, I can open the map, I can scan with the probes, I can grab the edge of the bubble and manipulate the size of the bubble. I can't grab the arrows nor the face of the probe and move it -- all it does is spin the map. I have tried various graphics settings with no changes. I'm going to try tweaking wine registry keys to see if it changes anything (I don't understand why it would, but want to be thorough).
Edit: Have tried different registry keys, and even recompiled my hack of wine with slightly different settings -- nothing. It should be noted that it worked fine a number of patches ago.
I can see the warp tunnel just fine with 6.10.83552. They've improved its "start/stop" points to better coincide with where you are from the warp to point as well. Sounds working very nicely as well. Not much different than my last testing post.

Beat me to the punch. I have never had "fbo" off as I'm on an 8800 card that hasn't had the issues that the 6x-7x cards have been showing.
Was gonna recommend the cache bit, but hey....good stuff. This latest revision has me thinking that release day will be "the day" at this point.
Just a side note, but the mac users finally got a test client today, which makes me think that build wise only smaller tweaks are going to be in put in place from here out. I say this because TG is notororiously bad at dealing with big changes to the client in a timely manner, and if cider/mac is available, well we're getting close.

LOL. Training long skills on patch day is LAW! Doesn't matter what platform. Personally I think the mac folks have more to worry about than we wine users at this point due to the history of another company having to work on the code besides CCP, but regardless a skill level 5 is mandatory as things can and do go boom on ze big day...and this patch day is the biggest one I've ever seen...and I've been here since the opening bell.

They have broken sound for me, but they have listed it as a common bug, were calling for dxdiag outputs, but i'm not in the mood after a elitist player response on the probes thread from a Muppet there. Feel all angry and icky lol.
I have to agree that although seem stable for us I'm seeing some dev flailing going on, there tending to break things with apparently small, but actually drastic changes. Attempts to get things in last minute or whack fast and furious fixes in. We will wait and see. Its very impressive for Wine as it stands. But i believe it when i see it

Posted this info in the fleet feedback thread in general:
<snip> ----------------- # Which test you were in: 7 march 2000
# OS version: Ubuntu 8.10 /wine 1.1.16
# CPU: AMD x2 64 dualcore 3800
# GPU: Nvidia 8800GTS nvidia 180.29 drivers
# RAM 4gig
# Average FPS during the test(s): brackets on = .5 - 2fps brackets off 5-20fps
# Did you have Audio enabled? Yes
# Did you have brackets turned on? on AND off as described above.
# Did you use 'optimize settings'? If so, which one did you use? No. System is optimized. All settings HIGH, shadows off. (HDR= ON, Bloom=high)
# On a scale of 1-10, how would you compare FPS and performance between this test and TQ? (1=way worse, 5=same as TQ, 10=OMG this is awesome): 7
# Describe your experience, make comments, suggestions, etc.
The client behaved excellently through the fight. There was the normal lag associated with several hundred on SISI in a fight, with a bit of lag on module activation, but client behaved and no CTD's even during a point where I had the brackets "on" to determine FPS/lag differences. (they were HUGE differences by the way.) --------------
Client held up beautifully during the middle of a massive engagement. There was the usual lag/fps drag but this was very playable, to the point of getting targeted by caps with fighters in my tempest and being able to get out of the fight before suffering heavy damage and then warping back to optimals for continued sniper support.
This client to me at this point is better than the version we use on Tranquility.

Now go and destroy.
That replacement file worked very well for me, Thank you very much. The last thing to fix for me are the probe cubes, unfortunately I cannot move any probes in space. Anyone an idea?
Try this solution from a page back: probe resolution post 99
Which indicates: <snip>It also seems that you need the Reg Key "OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo" in order to grab and drag the probes.<snip>

And SISI now matches Tranquility. So there ain't no 'patch from 80463 per se. If you're looking, just delete the sisi copy and then copy the main ccp folder to a new sisi version.
If history servers here, we'll not see any updates to SISI for a slight bit until the internal 'cleansing' following the big release is taken into account. With the new 'scrum' team stuff that CCP is utilizing though, I could be wrong here.
Anyway, a heartfelt ROCKON! to all you folks who have been helping test and bug report the APOC stuff. Whether CCP cares or not, this old school 03 veteran appreciates what our little community has been doing here.
