It occurs to me that a "wreck" is probably a diffuse cloud of junk and dust held together by microgravity and a few wires...
Maybe there could be an optional "mini-game" in which the salvaging player uses the salvager beam like a mini tractor beam to tear apart the wreck and fish out the good parts. Unfortunately for the player, all of the bits would move according to realistic physics. So, as the player fishes for good stuff, the wreck becomes more diffuse until it loses cohesion and they lose their lock.
The character's salvaging skill (and maybe some new skills) would help them keep the wreck cohesive and to control the beam more accurately.
The benefit of using the mini-game is the chance to collect more loot (say up to 100% more) from a given wreck. Of course, badly played, the player would get less on average.

and it would also take a goddamn year and a month to salvage after a mission ------------------------------------------------ When you get to the end of your journey, everything that really matters is the journey itself. |

Or we could substitute a round of BubbleBobble for docking a ship. Win the round and your ship docks. Lose it and you crash into the station.

Hence the optional part. The idea is just to provide players with options. |

Frankly I think mining needs something like this. Salvaging doesn't really. I think salvager modules should be necessary to fetch both the loot and the salvage, though, that'd be more realistic... |

Adding something like this to mining would might stop or draw back the macro mining / afk mining so i think its a good idea.
On the other hand im voting to get salvage/Tractor drones and mining smartbombs ingame ;)

no, it wouldn't, if there is one thing macros are good for, its finding a specifically colored pixel on a screen. you would just be giving smart macros a way to be BETTER then real players, instead of worse.
also, as someone famously said on these very forums, if you think mining is boring now, just wait until you add a mind numbing repetitive minigame to it! |
