CCP changed something slightly but it still feels the same since the last time I played EVE last year in Trinity. Basically you warp your first ship in and get the npc's attention, then you safely bring in your second ship which seems to be ignored as it helps pummel down the rest.
Divert aggro as additional ships warp in.
Ship 1 warps in. 100% focus of aggro'd targets is on them. Ship 2 warps in. ~75% focus is on them, ~25% on Ship 2 Ship 3 warps in. ~50% focus on Ship 1, ~25% on ship 2, ~25% focus on ship 3. Ship 4 warps in. ~25% focus is now on all 4 ships.
This does not have to be exact, but I think NPCs should break off the primary target if additional fleet members join the fray rather than just ignore them until the first ship warps out.
Also when new enemies spawn they tend to go for the last ship that jumped in, there is no real priority based on the fleet ship classes, who has the most firepower or shields/armor, or the most/least speed.

Edited by: Winter Dragon on 17/02/2009 10:33:06 An observation to human players who warp into mission areas uninvited - whether to salvage wrecks, jam or scramble or just destroy the mission runner outright, NONE of the npc ships attacking the mission runner seem to show any interest in THEM which doesn't seem right.
I have nothing against either activity myself and reckon you deserve what's coming if you try to mission in low security on your own. Still, it just seems wrong that the NPCs ignore anyone else who warps in, and if you stick your nose into a mission area and there's still NPC enemies around, SOME of them should turn their focus to you even if they're engaging the mission runner. They should not ignore you entirely.

Read the dev blogs mate. The next patch will bring us "The Sleepers" with a completely new NPC AI. It is only the first "testing stage", the goal will be to replace the AI of all NPCs with that new one.
