Is there a difference in how much you mine if you mine in a 1.0 system or a .4 system. In other words, if I mine Veldspar in a 1.0 systema and was getting a rate of 200 ore per minute, would I get 200 ore per minute in a .4 system?

you would still get the same 200 per minute the only thing diferent in mining in a 1.0 and .4 is the baddies and player rats that try to atttack you in the .4. .4 also has more differnt ores to chose from than in a 1.0 MOO MOO MILK!!! |

if you want to increase the rate at which you're mining, a) use mining drones as well as your miner b) use multiple miners c) increase your skills d) upgrade to a better miner

In terms of m3 of ore, yes you will get the same in any system. In terms of amounts of ore, they will be wildly different.
For example, I mine about 550m3 of ore/minute. If I was mining veldspar, I would get 5500 units of ore/minute as each unit takes up 0.1m3 of space in my hold. When I am mining arkonor, I only get 24 units of ore/minute as each unit takes up 16m3 of space.
The main benefit of mining in lower sec systems is the quality of ore available to you. In 1.0 systems, only veldspar and scordite are available in general with maybe some pyroxeres if you're lucky. In a 0.4 system all three of these will be available with pyro being much more plentiful. In addition you will have some or all of the "better" ores like plagioclase, kernite, omber and jaspet to choose from.
Of course there's tougher opposition from NPC rats and even the possibility of PC pirates to worry about.

I am out doing some prospecting. If I survey 3 or 4 belts in a system with 20-odd belts, and there is just the same 5 ores in all of the belts I have looked at, I am safe in assuming they are all the ore types I am going to see in that system, or might there be other, rarer, ores in other belts in the same system?

There may only be one or two belts in a particular system with a particularly rare ore in them, or you may find a system abundant with a particular type of very valuable ore (s-u anyone?).
The only way you can really be sure is to check em all. Get into a corp that holds mining operations. There are loads of them out there, you could try the recruitment channel on these boards.
People generally have time and energy for new players in these kinds of corps. Plus you'll probably make a hell of a lot of money.
Have fun!!! ----------------

I dont mean to nick your post but I was hoping we could expand on that subject. I went to 0.1 and actually found better ore types in 0.2.. I can see Jasper, Omber, Hemophorite etc..but cant find "crockite" is it? and the other really rare ore types.. Is that only found in 0.0 sec space?
Many Thanks

Crokite, Arkonor etc is only found in 0.0 space. The current problem with mining in 0.4-0.1 over say a 0.5 is that you can make almost as much money mining in the safe 0.5 as you can in the almost completely unsafe 0.4. 0.0 is the only low sec mining really worth it at the moment, but if you ever got down there for a mining op with a corp you would become a hell of a lot richer than you would mining anything else.

Many thanks.. Only till i moved to low sec space did i realise the benefits comapared to 0.5+ are minimal.
On the plus side ive found a very quiet spot to mine, and theres no mass mining convoys stipping everything. Also, those 100k NPC pirates pay their way also
I would goto 0.0 but I did that once back in november.. and got owned at the first jump gate.. lol
