Hi, I am a 1 month old Caldari pilot who has basic caldari frig IV and cruise III. I am now looking to start training toward my next ship which I was planning on Caldari Assault Ship. However, I have read that Assault ships are pretty useless and I am now leaning towards a battle cruiser. Between Assault Ships and Battle Cruisers which would be the better choice (I plan on doing small fleet pvp)? Also, would you advice that I cross train to another factions ships? Since I have been focusing all my training on my learning skills it really wouldn't be a terrible thing to cross train at this point in my career. Thanks in advance.

a drake would be a good bid, it's very flexible and you'll find some very battle hardened fitting advice for it since it's quite popular.
if you want to cross train with minimal impact then minmatar would be the best bid since they use missiles aswell as shield tanking on some of their ships.. minny are a bit of a do it all race in that fashion.. and their guns are completely capless and they are quite decent for pvp and their battleship line can be extremely deadly!
some of them however do armor tanking aswell so that's a bit harsh for a new guy, but you can just fly the shield tanking ships instead, they have both armor and shield tankers in each ship class more or less, and then you can skill on the armor tanking later.. you will have to train projectile turrets however to get the full benefit of them.
amarr or gallente i simply wouldn't advice you at this point with you being caldari char, it'll just take too damn long for you to get em up and running especially if you don't have that much isk in the first place for implants skills n stuff..
amarr is insanely skill intensive in basically all areas, and has a lot of issues when your skills are not up to par, though when your skills are golden they really shine.. and gallente requires some intensive drone skilling aswell as gunnery and tank and a set of brass balls.
now all this said is still not enough because what's most important for you is naturally.. "when the f will my skills be done so that i can start shooting at stuff".
well there's a program called evemon where you can plan your skill and see how long they take to complete, you should ask your friends about more detail how it works before you check it out.
i hope you found the information helpful, have fun playing eve online.

Edited by: Spaztick on 12/02/2009 20:43:19 SHINING, I SAW A FUGGIN UFO IN THE SKY YESTERDAY NIGHT.
I don't think it was a ship, looked similar to a star but was really really big, and didn't move even though I watched it for an hour. It's been there for about a week. Not sure what it is, may very well be a star but it is a really freakin huge star.
And yes a Drake is an excellent ship, flexible and usable for both PvP and PvE if you can fit it out right. And after all this time, I finally removed that annoying sentence in my signature.

Assault ships useless?
Don't tell that to my victims. They might actually start killing my AFs.

The harpy is a nasty piece of work. You could also crosstrain to gallente or amarr, but i would suggest gallente. For one you have shield tanking skills, which is very useful on a number of gallente ships (IE myrmidon, Ishtar etc). And you have both missile and hybrid skills, which are needed for some ships like the Lachesis.
That said basters are sorta gimped right now.

For a new player -- assault frigs are ALOT of fun for not alot of ISK. Not only that but you can branch out to electronic attack frigs, bombers, covops, & interceptors. All of which are fun and cheap. While they aren't solo-pwnmobiles, they are not primaried in fleet fights and often can escape if they are threatened.
They are also decent ratters for the skillpoints. Works best in a pair tho.

If you want to have the most fun, IMO: train Amarr, they are good, lazers are cool, and its probably the most FUN race to play at present. That said; if you are going to stick with Caldari, I suggest flying Crows (caldari interceptor) and Drakes until experience has taught you what every other ship in the game can do....
at that point, you will know enough to make the decision on your own --
