I was wondering, havent tried yet, but maybe while you are can mining, you can try jettisoning like a round or two of hybrid ammo or what have you, over and over and over until theres about 30-40 cans around your ship, but meanwhile you have the one with your ore bookmarked.
They are gonna get it regardless, but would still be nice to make them sift through a bunch of cans, especially in one big mess. Would definately slow them down a little.

i think you are forgetting the massive amount of time it would take you to jettison those 30-40 cans, it's one or two minutes between every jettison you can make, so at best we are talking about wasting 30-40 minutes, and at worst 60-80 minutes...

a gm will gladly tell you to stop this cause you using cans as lag creators

Just as a side note, you can actually jettison loads of cans really quickly using a shuttle. Just fill your cargo with bm's and jettison each one. A shuttle has no time limit between can jettisons.

Yes, you can get banned for jetting cans to create lag and using the lag to help you kill people. It's called an exploit.
No, you can't get banned for jetting cans to aggrivate ore thieves because you are not using the lag to your advantage.
If you could get banned for creating lag, everytime you and 3 or more friends were in the same place you'd get banned. What you get banned for is creating lag to use to your advantage. That's obviously not the intent here simply because the miner can't use the lag for anything in this case.

just tank the npc damage but don't blow them up, once an ore thief comes into the system the npcs may hassle him/her enough in the belt that he/she won't make it to your can. I had 5 Blood Reavers on me last night for about an hour straight.

Alternatively, just mine highend in gangs in 0.0 and sell it for lowend, been working for me.
If you tank a spawn, as above, leave *the second* a lone hauler (ore thief) enters and they'll target him instead... helps to mine where the rats is nasty for that one.

I think typical ore thieves stay in more secure space, like .9 or 1.0 - NPC's won't be a problem for the Indy-running thieves I have heard about.

just make a few cans with names and the can you will be mining you don't change the name so it looks like rat loot. And place the named cans random around the belt. Also put times on it wich are about an hour ago or more
