I would really appreciate a nice set-up or somebody point me in right direction.
My current idea is:
High: 3 strip II's
Mids: 1 gisti b type then perhaps 1 hardener and 2 cap rechargers
Low: mining upgrades
Rig: capacitor control circuits
I am currently skilling up my tanking but any advice as to skills I need would be helpful too. |

Flip out the rat specific hardner to match the rats and enjoy.

Edited by: Writ Insand on 14/02/2009 16:04:20 I'm going to assume that you want to avoid the expense of a Gisti-A booster.
[Hulk, Tanks MOST spawns] Mining Laser Upgrade II Mining Laser Upgrade II
Pithi B-Type Small Shield Booster Caldari Navy Heat Dissipation Field Survey Scanner II Eutectic I Capacitor Charge Array
Modulated Strip Miner II, Veldspar Mining Crystal II Modulated Strip Miner II, Veldspar Mining Crystal II Modulated Strip Miner II, Veldspar Mining Crystal II
Anti-Kinetic Screen Reinforcer I [empty rig slot]
The above setup is not suitable for angel rats because they use 3 major damage types (not 2 as is commonly asserted) and target paint. A small signature radius is essential to the hulk's tank, so shield rigs + target painting + 1 untanked damage type = dead hulk.
You can add a drone mining augmentor, but it requires a 5% CPU implant.
[Hulk, tanks ALL spawns] Mining Laser Upgrade II Expanded Cargohold II
Pithi B-Type Small Shield Booster Caldari Navy Heat Dissipation Field Caldari Navy Ballistic Deflection Field Eutectic I Capacitor Charge Array
Modulated Strip Miner II, Veldspar Mining Crystal II Modulated Strip Miner II, Veldspar Mining Crystal II Modulated Strip Miner II, Veldspar Mining Crystal II
[empty rig slot] [empty rig slot]
Swap the expanded cargohold for a capacitor power relay if your cap skills are mediocre. Alternately, swap it out for a second MLU with 5% cpu implant(MLU4)/3% cpu implant(MLU5).

really depends on what rats you are tanking.
I used this setup for tanking angel rats in -0.7 truesec
[Hulk, CURRENT] [empty low slot] [empty low slot]
Pithi B-Type Small Shield Booster Explosion Dampening Field II Ballistic Deflection Field II [empty med slot]
Strip Miner I Strip Miner I Strip Miner I
Capacitor Control Circuit I Capacitor Control Circuit I
CCC rigs because I had horrible cap-skills at the time. It could tank 3 angel commander (500k bounty) battleships and some frigs/cruisers as long as it they fired kin/exp at me. However the tank would not hold against 3 em dmg dealing cruisers or the therm dealing bs; Angel Saint.
This is what my EFT warrior skills have come up with, should be able to tank any of the regular angel rat spawns. it fits and is capstable at all V.
[Hulk, Perfect Yield & Tank] Mining Laser Upgrade II Mining Laser Upgrade II
Pithi A-Type Small Shield Booster Caldari Navy Explosion Dampening Field Caldari Navy Invulnerability Field Cap Recharger II
Modulated Strip Miner II, Arkonor Mining Crystal II Modulated Strip Miner II, Arkonor Mining Crystal II Modulated Strip Miner II, Arkonor Mining Crystal II
Anti-Thermal Screen Reinforcer II Anti-Kinetic Screen Reinforcer II
Mining Drone II x5
That being said, 2 T2 MLU's and 3 Strips is all the mods you need on a 0.0 hulk unless you are the assigned tank on a mining op. make bookmarks 150km off every belt and just warp around whenever rats spawn.

Edited by: Darthewok on 15/02/2009 13:27:15 Edited by: Darthewok on 15/02/2009 13:26:07 Something quite different for variety:
[Hulk, Hassle-free] High: 3 Strip Miner Is Mids: 1 Gisti-B, 1 Pithi-C, Invulnerability Field II, 1 Cap Recharger II Low: 2 x Cargohold Expander IIs Rigs: 2 CCC Is
This does not mine as efficiently as a hulk with MLUs of course, but has the advantage of not needing a hauler and is extremely low management. Ideal for mining long hours with minimal effort.
GL with the tanking!

Edited by: Aurora 0mega on 16/05/2009 11:07:04 i have maby a nice setup for low sec solo mining:
its inside caldary space and the rats give knitec thermic dmg, so for me its 60% em 80 % thermic 85% knitec 73% explosive if ur in amarr space u can change the hardeners becourse i use 2 of them.
for caldary spcae Like this:
High: 3 x Strip miners, T1 T2 or faction
MED: 1 x Gist Type B small shield booster 1 x Invulnerability Field II 1 x Heat dissipation II 1 x ballistic dissipation II (For amarr space u can use EM hardener)
Low: thats ur chose or a big cargo or u have a hauler and use 2 Warp stabs 2x warp stab
Rig 2 x CCC rigs
i hope this is a nice setup.

I've read the mining guide however, I was unable to tank a certain type of rat in drone space (striker it think it was)
Is there a way to tell what kind of damage is being done to a ship?

There are a couple of ways, but both of them require some initiative on your behalf. There is no simple way of pulling this info up in-game. You can either:
1) Use external resources (such as http://eveinfo.com/npcships/, which has a few very nice features... make sure you check whether the numbers you're looking at represent damage-per-hit or damage-per-second) to look up the damage type of whatever type of rat you happen to be up against. I can't vouch for the info provided being up to date, however, so you may want to confirm that before you rely on things you find on the internet.
2) Calculate the numbers yourself by equipping different hardeners to determine how much damage is mitigated by what percent change in a specific resistance.
#1 is definitely the easiest method, unless you're a masochist. :)

MY HULK WAS FITTED WITH THE FOLLOWING
3x strips (t1 or t2)
gisti b-type booster 2x rat-specific passive hardeners empty slot
2x mlu 2
2x core defense operational solidifier (shorter boost cycles)
cap stable, tanks any guristas or serpentis spawn fine. survey scanner is probably a good idea. good cap and tanking skills are a must.
if you need MOAR TANK, switch to t1 MLUs, drop the rigs, drop in 2x active hardeners and a eutectic cap recharger and have at it. if you wanna keep your t2 MLUs, switch to CN active hardeners and a eutectic cap charger. rigs however you want them, just remember that shield rigs probably do as much harm as good due to increased sig radius.
personally, i don't rig it, so i can repackage it and move it around without throwing out isk for rigs.
