Alright, here's the info: recently, while playing EVE on my computer, it just randomly shuts down. It doesn't matter if just EVE is up or if I'm computing pi to the nth digit. This is usually after the system has been running for a while though, so at first I thought it was a heat problem. Well, I started logging my temps while playing Left 4 Dead on near max settings, and it didn't crash. Comparing it to the logs of when my computer shuts down during EVE, the temps are HIGHER than L4D. Today, I turned all my fan settings to max, and logged my temps when it crashed, and the temps for nearly everything but the hard drives was slightly lower than when the computer is idle at normal fan speeds. Any other game I'm playing doesn't cause this; just EVE. I'm running the premium graphics on my system with all updated drivers. My machine is easily capable of the premium, but here's the setup: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ (Windsor), 4 GB Ram, nVidia 8800 GT, Realtek integrated sound, and Windows XP SP3 with latest updates.

I had the same problem, that after running eve for some time it would make a weird sound from my headphones and then it would either reboot or turn of the computer, now it has evovled to go to black screen instantlky upon splash screen or enter acc and pass screen. I i can play all other games without any trouble still this game wont. have had the problem for 3 days or so..

It sounds as though it is your sound drivers. Update as soon as you can. If you have RealTek HD audio go HERE and get the latest version for your card. For other sound cards go to their relevant sites. If you dont get new drivers - WHEN you get into the game (account log-in screen, not the game itself) press esc and turn off all Eve sounds, hardware acceleration etc etc. This is what is causing the high-pitched sound and making your comp turn off or reboot. If you already have the latest drivers for your audio, un-install and re-install as they can maybe be corrupted by the installation of the latest patch for Eve.
Good luck

Edited by: Violet Serena on 16/02/2009 22:08:23 It could be heating in spite of the heating log.
Seriously, open up the computer and blow it out with a leaf blower or exhaust of a canister vacuum.
I find I have to do that about once a year. Make sure you blow through the power supply, the fans, the fan on the 3D card, and any vents in the sides of the box.
And make sure you hit the cooling wings (heat sink) on the processor -- that is behind some small fans or whatever on top of it, so it can be difficult to get at.

I have to hit my computer once a month with a can of air on account of my CPU heatsink having fins too close together for its own good. I cleaned it out 3 days ago.
I also tried changing the buffer delay setting, and it caused even the classic graphics client to shut down my computer. I haven't tried changing it back though; I'm trying to get the classic working on my laptop right now, just to warp my ship back to a station.

You probably notice that your client will freeze for a few seconds every few minutes the longer Eve has been running as well?
If I remember right, this 'stutter' was said to be caused by memory fragmentation that progressivly gets worse untill the client crashes and you reboot your PC.
If this happens to you as well, we will have to wait untill a fix comes out. In the meantime, start rebooting your pc when you notice the stutter getting worse. Pain in the ass I know.
Unfortunatly, I can not find the a link to what I read that specifically says its memory fragmentation that is causing this stutter.

Nope. There is no stutter, just a shutdown. Not a heat problem as I have other games that are more system intensive than Eve. Not a power problem either, as my multimeter attests to. Granted, my motherboard seems to think that the 12v line is only supplying about 10v and the 5v is supplying 6v+, but I trust my multimeter over the motherboard any day. I have the latest drivers for literally EVERYTHING attached to my computer, so the only problem I can come up with is Eve itself. Changing the interval to one or immediate doesn't affect it; changing the graphics to classic don't stop it from happening either. I am at my wit's end, as there is NOTHING I can do to stop the program from restarting my computer other than not playing at all.

Seriously... when will people listen?
Eve drives your graphics card harder than any other program I've met including Crysis, Fallout 3 and Far Cry 2...
At least try setting "Present Interval" to "Interval One" in the graphics settings of Eve?
If it doesn't work we can work forward from there.
Also: you said you don't trust the motherboard volt-meters? If that's the case then why trust it's temperature readings? (I'd use a multimeter for reliable voltage readings too btw). ===================================== It smells of spoon! ===================================== |

Damn - so it isn't just me. Exact same symptoms, mine just started after installing the expansion. No warning - off. Not a heat issue, not dust, hardware works well with all other apps. Heck - Am currently calculating Pi to 32M digits to prove a point to myself. Will uninstall and re-install and see what happens.

same issue here.
I keep checking the system logs, nothing suspicious there.
first black screen, than reboot.
It's as if I overclock my gfx card (4850) and it locks my system up-- I am now turning down the clock speed of my gfx, maybe it helps.

i have the same issue or at least similar. I think it is overload graphics on mine. Just locks up on loading at times while in game. Then goes to black screen. I have to hard reboot. The issue is related to this new patch, i believe.

The first thing I would blame for something like this is faulty drivers. (Note that new drivers can also be faulty! Try older versions if there aren't newer once.)
I had a similar problem with WinXP SP1... 3D apps kept rebooting my computer. Turned out the driver provided by SP1 for my integrated audio card (which I didn't even use) were causing memory problems, which triggered reboots when the 3D apps started eating up resources.
