Edited by: Darthewok on 25/09/2009 11:42:45 Hmm, no alternative to Warriors then for anti-frig defence. And even then AFs and inties may just tank them. Thanks for the advice (and math!) people.
Edit: just saw the comment about webs + Valks. hmm interesting option.

Yeah man, good luck to you. With the math showing, it seems what you want to do is have the drones chase the frig and not orbit, which means matching or getting close to their speed. If you keep down that angular velocity they should hit pretty well, but the trick is to keep in there optimal without being able to see any data on what the drones are doing. Maybe one day CCP will give us a better drone interface that gives us there speed and angular velocity compared to the ship they are targeting. Good luck and collect some data if you can. I'll be trying. -------------------------------------------------- I love your mom. |

Yep. Problem is: drones are stupid. And it pretty much depends on target if they will be following or orbitting. So as a pilot defending from a frig you dont have much choice: release drones, put neut on frig, pray.
BUT... there is one option/idea. Try to eject can and move away from it. Order drones to orbit can and then engage target repedeately. I think it could enable you to get better hits with meds/heavies (especially heavies) - AKA hit-on-approach. I guess this is the only way to actually reduce tracking issues of larger drones.
And again... i wish CCP would fix mediums a bit by reducing their scan res (80? 100?).

So webs actually worsen/lower the effectiveness of drones? What the?

It depends on a lot of factors. small drones vs anything, no difference if web or no-web mediums - vs mwd use web, vs ab... depends on total velocity of target (you want drones chasing after target so optimal target velocity should be around 600m/s) heavies - as mediums
Thing is: if drones approach target they have much lower transversal = they can actually hit and deal damage. When they enter orbit they start missing. Its exactly same as with frig MWDing towards sniper battleship. If he is far and approaching at straight line he will get hit. If he is close and orbitting, he will not get hit.

Hmm, I see, damn it makes me wish I could see what damage my drones are pulling off so I could test this, as opposed to my friends sending me the damage back. Thanks for the info.

This needs to be fixed imo, else it's almost an advantage to not train up drone velocity skills.. EVE Trivia EVE History

IIRC, drone velocity skills only apply to the approach, not the orbit velocity of drones. A 600m/s target as in the example above will not let them stay at approach speeds, but go into orbiting mode, so the drone navigation junk doesn't actually gimp their tracking. (Same for the drone velocity mods. They chance their MWD thrust, not their base speed.)

Yeah its strange that drones orbit faster what they can track...
