Originally by: Burtheson No, that doesn't mean the HAC is worth less when somebody pops it.
Yes it does. If someone spends 30mil to buy a HAC and t2 fittings, when it pops they're down 30mil.
Yes they COULD sell it, but for some money isn't an option, and tbh, if I could buy HACs at that price from people I'd probably be too busy having fun in PK (losing them ) to care what the bat**** insane market markup is. If I spend 30mil and lose the ship, then I've only lost 30mil, not 200mil. You don't lose isk you've never had.
edit: And if your friends find you're taking the HACS they sell you at discount, to sell them on the market, you're going to be down a friend very soon.
I guess you dont really get it. The opportunity cost is the only realistic way of assessing the value of ships lost. What you could've had instead of whatever is worth X isk, hence X isk is the opportunity cost of that item.
While its true that some people pay less for items, if you want to try to apply a standard like that everyone will claim they pay next to nothing for every item, so as to minimize their isk losses in war.
This makes it pretty obvious opportunity cost is the only useful yardstick for tracking isk lost during a war, because all other numbers will be hopelessly argued and arbitrary.
To the person claiming that build cost should be used, I think you should've gone to class more often.

Some people are too stupid to realize that when you are given the oppurtunity to buy your hacs dirt cheap, that it is usually for a reason.
With that said, if they find you selling the hacs they sold to you for cheap for market price instead of the uses intended, you will probably find that privilage taken away,

Seems like the argument was lost a few pages ago. I think what everyone is getting at is the value of what was lost. That's the most unbiased way to look at the costs of war. Anyways, kudos to Goon for showing some class and not ranting like others.
