Hi.
I have managed to locate a number of exploration site already, however this time I failed:
I used a cov-ops frig (level 4, and level 3 on all the new scanning skills) and the multispectral probe at first. It found a magnetometric source.
So I plastered the whole system with 4 magnetometric quest probe and scanned. I repeated that 5 times, so about 5 dozen scans (estimated) over maybe 6 hours.
It did not find anything.
I know it can be hard to find something sometimes, but THIS hard? Isnt that a bit extreme? Or could it have been a bug?
Comments and Suggestions welcome!

Took me about 4 hours to find a DS signature once so yeah it can take time, afaik the harder the site is to find the more rewarding it may be, but don't quote me on that.

Well, its a probability based system. Hopefully the overall chance of success is on a nice bell curve, thus you may have just been rather unlucky and experienced one of the tails.
Try overlapping your quest probes if you can, even setting up mid warp bookmarks to aid in doing so, so that you gain as much benefit as you can from multiple probes.

I had the same situation last night. Scan and scan I tried, and couldn't find anything. Even after a multispec told me there was a signature in system. ___________________________________________________ "I'm an engineer, not a miracle worker!" - Scotty, Star Trek: TOS

Had a similar case: Scanned for 6 hours -> nothing. Went to bed Scanned the next day for 6 hours again -> Found
Then i made a mistake and the plex vanished

I spent 9 hours trying to find two sites, grav and mag, in a .8 system. I got a hit with grav quests, and a hit somewhere else with mag quests. I forget to BM the grav hit, go out with the grav probe again, and get a hit on the third try. NINE hours of scanning with appropriate range probes later, I give up for the day, and come back the next to just flip the probes for ****s and giggles. I'm sufficiently convinced that the sites are what I got with the quest probes, but were they? No. On fourth and fifth scans I got both sites, by using the "wrong" probes. Turns out the quests mixed up the sites 3 ****in times.

Its that hard to find my signatures?
They're all over the forums. Well, if you still can't find one, there's one below this post.

Last week I spent 8 hours trying to scan a site down. By the time I found it I could only play for another hour and had to go. Sadly this just seems to be the deal with exploration and it sucks (Dev said they are aware of the issue as people in their own office run over to them complaining about the length of time this takes...whether they will change this I have no clue).
I think the real problem is it is difficult to scan inner planets as your probes overlap. So you have no idea if your probes are in the right place and just missing their scan or if your plex is off a planet you have no probe coverage on.

Has anyone actually found one in under 4 hours of probing? I thought initially this may look interesting, but 4 hours..

Is it chanced based using a random number out of another random number??
I would prefer a fixed strength on every sig and each time you scan you increase the chance of getting to that number
i.e plex is certain value, and each scan you do gives you a random number between 0-500. After each scan the random number is subtracted from the plex value.
Plex Sig = 900 Scan 1 = 125, Plex Sig = 775 Scan 2 = 300, Plex Sig = 475 Scan 3 = 400, Plex Sig = 75 Scan 4 = 125, Plex Sig = -50
On the 4th scan you find the plex. ______

Warp around and set a bunch of bookmarks and then drop about twice as many probes as you need with as much overlap between the bubbles as possible.
Doing this usually gets me a location within an hour.
I think the reason is that distance from the probe plays a factor in your chances of detecting it. So overlaping can end up putting a probe closer to it.
