Actually there is an easy way to protect your drones <0.9. Tank the rats. I (used to) mine ice in 0.8 and tank the rats in a Covetor.. so it's possible. Might not be possible to do it with a barge in 0.6, but a cruiser or battleship certanly can.

Give all frigates and cruisers + 1 to all slots (high, med and low), but leave PG/CPU and turrets/missile as they are. This would allow for some more creative loadouts. Give cruisers +20% to shields/armour/structure/speed/agility
