Heres what fixed it. (So far) It's still CCPs fault so I only have to eat a little bit of crow. Before wiping the entire HD I uninstalled the (lastest) Nvidia driver. i installed the oldest one I still had saved away. Started and logged in fine ...

Windows XP (Yes, I tried running it in 98 compatability mode) geforce 5200 No. nothing added since working well. No changes made to computer, nothing downloaded other than the patch. Problems began immediatly after patch installation.
