People often mix low fps (frames per second rendered) and lag (problem with to much transfer data for the client-server connection). All graphical things with no impact on gameplay should never cause lag but can cause fps drops.

Another idea for an energy weapon: A cannon which shoots a stream of gas which then gets used to send electricity to the target. Would be a short range energy weapon which causes pure EM damage.

If there is a new weapon, there should be 3, one for every race. Plasma fits best to Hybrid or Energy I would say. A new Projectile turret could be a granade launcher or a shrapnel/shotgun type of weapon.

There should be small thrusters on the sides of the ships which get used when the ship rotates. That would make the ships look much more realistic.

Only a small change. Missiles already hit an enemy ship at different locations, what looks great. Turrets always hit the exact same spot over and over again, what looks strange.
