I'm not sure about "where it's going," but there are items in the future to look towards. Example #1 is the infamous 5th race (don't recall the name off the top of my head) which has yet to be found. That in its own right will open up more option...

I was reading where you can purchase a planet. It begs the question . . . why would you want to do that? You can't travel down to it, so what would be the benefit of owning one?
