Exterior painting of ships once existed in EVE but it was removed to ease the LAG IIRC i had some clanmates who started eve fiddling about with some tools ccp released before eve where you could design your ship before you got the game

i would imagine that keeping track of everyones every joystick movement would strain the server more than it is already compared to a mouse system where it just updates the direction and speed of a ship... Everything is handled on the server afaik
