Sounds like your Macbook Pro is faulty. Even prolonged periods of 100% CPU usage shouldn't make it smell of burning. Laptops are designed to be able to cool themselves fine even if running at 100% all day long.

If you've got one of the latest Macbook Pro's (the Santa Rosa ones) the answer should be Yes - the latest MBP comes with an NVidia 8600 graphics card, which is DX10 and Shader Model 3 compliant.
