You do the same things. You fight other players, you trade, you gather resources, you quest/mission.
You are limited by the gameplay. You can only do a certain amount of things in EVE such as mining, pvp, trading etc. while EVE may not have these things labeled they are there and they are limited. You can make up other non-gameplay related things to do but the same is true for other MMO's.
You enhance your skills. Be it by training or grinding, both take time and resources.
You enhance your gear. Mods, ships, gear, weapons it's all the same. The better you have the better you perform.
You grind to enhance your wealth/attributes. You rat for ISK and mods and salvage, you mission for ISK and standings, you trade for ISK etc. You spend the majority of your time in EVE grinding.
You are pushed into certain roles. You are a mission runner or a miner or a trader or a pirate etc.
You are pushed into certain shipsetups. Certain ships have certain roles and certain activities require certain setups. You can change around mods but in the end one setup is the optimal setup.
You buy and sell and manufacture in a virtual economy. Yes..just like in every other mmo... EVE economy is not unique.
You move around in a 3D world. Be it as a character a ship or any other object, you are moving around in a #D world interacting with other players doing the same things, jumping through gates portals and doors.
You think your mmo is better than others because (insert reason) Just like every other player. -------------- I R Not Completely Amazing, But I R Mostly Amazing |

Hrm... I play a protection spec warrior in WoW. I play a holy priest in WoW. In WoW, if I want to advance my tanking skills I have to switch to my warrior and play that. Then if I want to advance my healing skills I have to switch to my priest and play that.
In EVE, I play a Minmatar capsuleer. When I want to "tank", I fly my Drake. When I want to "heal" I fly my Osprey or Exequror. I can advance my skills in any arena for this one character. While time I spend levelling "healing" skills does detract from time I can spend levelling "tanking" skills, many of the skills are common (engineering, electronics).
Quote: You are pushed into certain shipsetups. Certain ships have certain roles and certain activities require certain setups. You can change around mods but in the end one setup is the optimal setup.
In WoW, a warrior cannot simply wear different armour to suddenly start healing, or switch from tanking to doing DPS. In EVE, I can vary my ship and module loadout to suit the situation. Full tanking with my Drake for "Vengeance", switch to the Raven for the missions where I can use range to my advantage. Then switch to a Blackbird or Osprey to support PvP gangs.
There is no "one true" setup. Even flying a Blackbird, if I have any intel about what fleet makeup we're facing, I can pick which modules to fit to optimise my performance against the expected enemies.
Quote:
You buy and sell and manufacture in a virtual economy. Yes..just like in every other mmo... EVE economy is not unique.
Hrm... switch to your tailor in WoW. Tell me how many "Frozen Shadoweave Robe" you can trade on the market.
Now come back to EVE and tell me how many Dread Guristas modules you can trade on the market.
There's a bit of a difference there, don't you think? EVE has a "second hand" market.
Quote: You think your mmo is better than others because (insert reason) Just like every other player.
Why would you be playing MMO "X" instead of "Y" if you didn't think "X" was better in some way?
Now, do something original and write up a list of reasons why EVE is different to other MMOs. Here's some suggestions for starters: in EVE you get to fight for control of the map (like Shattered Galaxy - are there any other MMOs that have this play style? And please, don't compare Nagrand or Wintergrasp, they're not the same thing - you can't raid Stormwind to take over Elwynn Forest for example). In EVE, the more friends you have the more powerful you are. In WoW, having more than 24 friends is pointless.
Have fun.

This will come as a shock to you!
MMO's are like other MMO's because they are MMO's !
Its the same as cars!... all cars are the same, 4 wheels, burn fuel, carry people, cost money.... People... two legs, two arms, eat food, grow old, die....
So congratulations! Youve managed to figure out defines an MMO, what exactly is your point?
Now, here is a little bonus challenge for you: List all the things which makes this MMO different from other MMOs!

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 17/02/2009 11:33:11 I'm coming out of my self-declared week of no forum posting to put my two cents in here. Maybe I should have made it a week of no forum reading too. For the most part yeah you're right, and we all know it even if we pretend to ignore it. However there are some points where I have to disagree.
Originally by: Mostly Amazing You enhance your gear. Mods, ships, gear, weapons it's all the same. The better you have the better you perform.
Anyone who has encountered a GTC-buying newb knows this isn't true. Eve is strange among MMOs in that it has the following paradox: You only need minimal skills to fly a very well-equipped ship (faction-fit faction battleship does not require a lot of training time), and yet player skill is a far more important factor than in most other MMOs. Faction fits on a good ship won't save you if you suck.
Quote: You grind to enhance your wealth/attributes. You rat for ISK and mods and salvage, you mission for ISK and standings, you trade for ISK etc. You spend the majority of your time in EVE grinding.
But you don't have to. If you're happy with a decently fit Rifter or Incursus, or a T1 Cruiser then you only have to spend a minimal amount of time ratting. Really you only have to clear a few belts of loot and salvage in low sec to afford a fitted tier 3 frigate. Most skills don't cost more than a few tens of millions of ISK, and I can't think of any essential PvP skill for people happy in small ships that costs even that much. Maybe advanced weapon upgrades or something but I don't really remember.
In Eve you can take a few million ISK in fitting, weapon, and ship skills and go out and learn to fight. Once your skills hit level 4 or so your flying skill is at least as important as hitting level 5... whereas in other MMOs grinding XP for the next level is far more essential if you want to advance in the game.
As for non-PvPers... industrialists presumably aren't grinding a lot either, since their ISK is made in the markets. Mission running is not a real profession; it's just a side job for people who need an infusion of quick millions for something, or who need standing. Anyone who actually does spend their entire time missioning... well fine. They're obviously happy with the grind so the grind complaint doesn't really apply to them.
Quote: You are pushed into certain roles. You are a mission runner or a miner or a trader or a pirate etc.
Patently false IMO. Even though these "roles" are the primary things that people do in Eve, nobody pushes anyone into any of them, and once someone comes to define themselves as one of these things there's still no reason why they have to stay there if they become bored. A player with a well-rounded attribute and skill tree like mine can shift from one to another and back again fairly painlessly once they hit around 20 million SPs, if not even sooner (that's just the area where I started to appreciate this fact.) People need to be satisfied with their chosen place in the game without maxing its related skills out sometimes. If you aren't so focused on hitting whatever tens of millions of SP mark in some narrowly defined area it'll really open your eyes to the other things the game has to offer.
Quote: You are pushed into certain shipsetups. Certain ships have certain roles and certain activities require certain setups. You can change around mods but in the end one setup is the optimal setup.
Fitting forum and personal experience begs to differ. Artillery Thorax will kill a blaster thorax thanks to superior range even though a Thorax fitting playing to the ship's strengths makes it the best blaster cruiser out there. Any "optimal" fit can be countered and defeated by an appropriate less-than-optimal fit that admittedly may suck at a bunch of other things.
Quote: market
Player-based manufacturing is a much, much bigger part of Eve than any other MMO I know of.

Edited by: Arthur Frayn on 17/02/2009 11:36:26 10 reasons why life is like every MMO out there:
You do the same things. You earn money/capital, you buy things, you interact with people and create social networks.
You are limited by the gameplay. You can only do a certain amount of things in life, such as working for a living, building a specific career path, owning your own business, travelling, seeing the "world", pvping anyone in the street if getting arrested is not a worry for you, or pvping in designated zones if you choose a career in the UFC. You can make up other non-survival related things limited by your own imagination, but this is true for all MMO's.
You enhance your skills. Be it by going to school, reading, or grinding at your job to gain new skills, all taking time and resources.
You enhance your gear. Housing, vehicles, furniture, clothing, weapons too if you're a violent meathead. The better you have, the better you perform.
You grind to enhance your wealth/attributes. You work for a paycheque, you climb the corporate ladder, or you go into business for yourself and trade for $$$ etc. You spend the majority of life grinding at work.
You are pushed into certain roles. You are a teacher, a doctor, a soldier, a cop, a middle manager, a construction worker, an advertising executive, a laborer a criminal, etc.
You are pushed into certain setups. Certain clothing has certain roles and certain activities require certain setups. You can change around shirts, pants, shoes, but in the end, one outfit is the optimal outfit. (Don't go to work in the clothes you woke up wearing from the night before!)
You buy and sell and manufacture in a real economy. Your country's economy is not unique. Wait, what the hell is a unique economy? One that doesn't involve working, buying and selling stuff? That's what an economy is.
You move around in a 3D world. Speaks pretty much for itself. I'm glad life isn't a 2D world. And a 4D world is something humans can't even visualize.
You think your life is better than others because (insert reason) Just like every other person. -- Eventus stultorum magister. |

You do the same things. Yeah, you play a game.
You are limited by the gameplay. All games are limitted by their rules. Thats the point.
You enhance your skills/gear/wealth/attributes All games generally include some sort of accumulation of advantage.
You are pushed into certain roles. As with any game. (E.g. you cannot be pirate in Monopoly... you're pushed into the role of Property Trader)
You are pushed into certain (ship)setups. As with all games. Ever tried playing soccer with 11 midfielders and no goalkeeper?
You buy and sell and manufacture in a virtual economy. Ok, not all games have an economy. However, EVEs is unique in the sense that its a SINGLE MASSIVE economy, rather than a collection of a few thousand smaller distinct economies on different shards.
You move around in a 3D world. Again, not all games are 3D. However, all games have to be either 2D or 3D, and all involve some sort of world (no matter how abstract). So what is your point?
You think your mmo is better than others because (insert reason) Again, everyone has a biased personal preference for anything that they happen to like.
You seem to have merely made a bunch of banal generalisations.

You know it would not be too hard to make Eve sound the same as a piece of fruit in 10 things, but failing to make it sound like another MMO with things that just aren't true, that shows a level of ... well... nothing.
Originally by: Mostly Amazing You do the same things. You fight other players, you trade, you gather resources, you quest/mission.
Most of my game time is not spent doing any of the above.
Quote: You are limited by the gameplay. You can only do a certain amount of things in EVE such as mining, pvp, trading etc. while EVE may not have these things labeled they are there and they are limited. You can make up other non-gameplay related things to do but the same is true for other MMO's.
Limited by game play in a game ? Well those are very wide limits, but you can say that about any game that you can't make content for, which doesn't include every MMO out there. (ie second life).
Quote: You enhance your skills. Be it by training or grinding, both take time and resources.
It's got to take 'something' but at-the-keyboard-clicking-time is different to just-wait-time. The only alternative to the above is 'your skills don't progress'. Which would really break the whole persistent role playing genre. It would be just an FPS/RTS then, and even some of those you could say you enhanced your skills, hell you could say that about mario.
Quote: You enhance your gear. Mods, ships, gear, weapons it's all the same. The better you have the better you perform.
The better you have != the better you perform. There's not even just 'better' there is 'better for a very specific role'.
Quote: You grind to enhance your wealth/attributes. You rat for ISK and mods and salvage, you mission for ISK and standings, you trade for ISK etc. You spend the majority of your time in EVE grinding.
Alternative is what ? Your wealth/attributes don't exist / increase automatically ? You certainly are 'doing it all wrong' if you spend the majority of your time grinding.
Quote: You are pushed into certain roles. You are a mission runner or a miner or a trader or a pirate etc.
In a role playing game, get out ! But no seriously, you don't think 99% of people are a mission runner AND a pirate, or some other 'AND' combination ? I'm not even sure that's true for all the other MMOs either, but it's certainly not true for Eve.
Quote: You are pushed into certain shipsetups. Certain ships have certain roles and certain activities require certain setups. You can change around mods but in the end one setup is the optimal setup.
The optimal setup to fight what the other person is fielding. This is like saying in scissors paper rock, one of those three is the optimal choice. (it's rock right? )
Quote: You buy and sell and manufacture in a virtual economy. Yes..just like in every other mmo... EVE economy is not unique.
The uniqueness is in the size. It's very easy for a single player to totally destroy the economy of most other MMOs, at least on 'that server'.
Quote: You move around in a 3D world. Be it as a character a ship or any other object, you are moving around in a #D world interacting with other players doing the same things, jumping through gates portals and doors.
There aren't 2D MMO's out there ? How about text based MMOs ? Lets go for a fourth option here ? A 4D MMO ?
This is rather akin to saying all life on Earth is like everything else on Earth, it's on Earth. A teaspoon is the same as urine.
Quote: You think your mmo is better than others because (insert reason) Just like every other player.
Everyone out there picks the MMO they like most, then doesn't play that, they actually pick the one they like second best, out of spite

Some of your points are pretty meh. However your really wrong on the above two.
People CHOOSE to be a certain role and play it over and over. There nothing stopping you training any skill in the game. The amount of skills you can train is entirely limitless.
People also CHOOSE to use cookie cutter set-ups made by people smarter than them over and over. Eves society is one of consistant hostility and "ripping the pish", meaning expect to havre the pish ripped for dieing with a non-cookie cutter set up. Some people lol at fittings without knowing what they are lawling about just because someone who is a respected PvPer in thier corp said so.
The problem isn't eve its the ******s your playing with. Eve gives you alot of choices, alot more than other mmos, if you arn't happy though go play jumpgate MMO its out on march 31st.

Damn I hate how people so make such baseless claims. We really do need to make scientific test before we can validate that claim.
Now we just need non-biased set of 200 humans to test with.

1) It's Icelandic 2) It's Internet Spaceships 3) It's a single unsharded server cluster

10 Ways Ice Cream is like Puppies
1. They are composed of atoms 2. While it may be messy with the ice cream, you can pet them both 3. While it may be gross with the puppy, you can lick them both 4. If you lower the temperature enough, both will become frozen solid 5. If you raise the temperature enough, both will melt 6. Both can bring you joy 7. Both can make a big mess all over the floor 8. If you run over either one of them with a car, they make puddle on the concrete 9. Neither one of them can be claimed as a tax deduction 10. You can eat them

Well I suggest you get honest with how negative your post actually is when contrasted against the amazing game play, and great people that is possible to interact with within Eve.

Common sense is common sense. If you're going to do a dumb thread like this at least include the differences between the mmos as well.

consenting to pvp by playing and theres no sides in eve. just 50k individuals logged in who would all LOVE you to meet their guns.
Originally by: Mostly Amazing
You are limited by the gameplay. You can only do a certain amount of things in EVE such as mining, pvp, trading etc. while EVE may not have these things labeled they are there and they are limited. You can make up other non-gameplay related things to do but the same is true for other MMO's.
you can only do so many things in life that are progressive as well, and several things that are not. internet spaceships: still debating.
Originally by: Mostly Amazing
You enhance your skills. Be it by training or grinding, both take time and resources.
your right. we should all play a game in which we are all equal. FPS ----> that way
Originally by: Mostly Amazing
You enhance your gear. Mods, ships, gear, weapons it's all the same. The better you have the better you perform.
well its an undeniable fact that killing things with bare hands<weapons. unless you are chuck norris.
Originally by: Mostly Amazing
You grind to enhance your wealth/attributes. You rat for ISK and mods and salvage, you mission for ISK and standings, you trade for ISK etc. You spend the majority of your time in EVE grinding.
do as many missions as you like in eve, you will not increase your attributes, which do nothing for you except help you train faster. that only works in a game with 'experience points'
Originally by: Mostly Amazing
You are pushed into certain roles. You are a mission runner or a miner or a trader or a pirate etc.
in your case, your a troll. or exceptionally stupid. anyone can do anything and anything if they want to.
Originally by: Mostly Amazing
You are pushed into certain shipsetups. Certain ships have certain roles and certain activities require certain setups. You can change around mods but in the end one setup is the optimal setup.
because no one is ever innovative enough to experiment and find a new way to kick ass. like shield tanking a domi and a myrm? phh, lame.
Originally by: Mostly Amazing
You buy and sell and manufacture in a virtual economy. Yes..just like in every other mmo... EVE economy is not unique.
except we have an economy far in advance. we have our own economist, and several players who are constantly speculating and trying to beat the market. also, scams are legal.
Originally by: Mostly Amazing
You move around in a 3D world. Be it as a character a ship or any other object, you are moving around in a #D world interacting with other players doing the same things, jumping through gates portals and doors.
want to play a 1d game? its right here .
Originally by: Mostly Amazing

like the shield tanked bait curse in the tournament... that only died so quick cos its allies fried its shield rep drones... no way you could have considered that an optimal setup... but it did its job
