Hello,
I'm fairly new to the game and I'm running missions but I'm not entirely sure what is the best "level" of ship to use for which level of missions. Please fill in the blanks :)
Level 1 = Frigates Level 2 = _________ Level 3 = _________ Level 4 = _________ Level 5 = _________
Also, if I train up to Assault Ships and start running an Ishkur:
Is that capable of running higher level missions?
Is it still considered a Frigate for the mission ship restrictions?
Thank you

Level 1's and 2's can be flown in a Destroyer. ===================================== It smells of spoon! ===================================== |

Yes it still counts as a frigate for restrictions
Assault Frigates (AF) can do some Level 4 missions with decent skills, both ingame skill points and out of game skills. The thing they lack is damage output for the battleships
Level 1 and 2 missions are easy in an AF, not so bad for level 3s but you are starting to feel the lack of DPS -----------------------------------------------

Battlecruisers can be used to do L4. Not as efficiently (generally) as a battleship but they can do it and often are used for them (as often people's skills in BCs and their guns actually exceeds their battleship/guns skills so they use a BC for L4 while they train to be capable in a battleship).

Be aware that some missions will have deadspace gates that are locked to ships larger than what you "should" be flying for that mission. Some level 3s wont allow you to use the gate in a Battleship (but they will function for a Battlecruiser).
I had to take my Ferox out of mothballs last night to complete one. I completed the mission pretty easily, but it took longer than it would have in my Rokh.

I've done some L2 missions in a Kessie and other times I had serious shield issues with "only" 11k shield of a Drake...
Conclusion: it depends.
Not all the Level "x" missions are same difficult.

Level 1 : T1 Frigate usually Destroyer, Assault Frigate, even Interceptor can be used, some are ok with a Cruiser too (not allowed in all L1 missions), anything larger is counter-productive
Level 2 : T1 Cruiser usually Assault Frigates or Heavy Assault Cruisers, even Battlecruisers can be used too (but a BC is kind of overkill). For some L2 missions Destroyers can manage relatively ok too.
Level 3 : T1 Battlecruiser usually Heavy Assault Cruisers are much better suited here, if you can use them. Field Command Ships work great too, being the combination between a HAC and a BC. Assault Frigates with decent skills can still work relatively ok in most L3s if you're strapped for cash and have no BC skills. If you plan it right, even Battleships could be useful... not quite the best, but can work too.
Level 4 : T1 Battleship usually Obviously a T2 battleship (Marauder) would be even better if you can and can afford to fly one. Field Command Ships are ok too, HACs are decent enough. There still are a handful of L4 that even an Assault Frigate could (very slowly) complete, but their use is not adviseable. T1 Battlecruisers can handle most L4s decently enough too, they're about on par with a HAC damage/tank wise overall, much cheaper though, but also a tad bit less agile.
Level 5 : FLEET of Battleships (+marauders) and Battlecruisers (+field command ships) While some L5s are "doable" solo, either with loads of warpouts, with clever tactics or with overkill in DPS tanked combined with decent firepower... or any combination thereof... it's usually not worth it, since it takes quite a while like that. You're much better off with a team of at least two, preferably three people who can all usually solo most L4 already in those ships (add a remote repper/booster to those setups)... then you will get decent enough results with minimal risks. Of course, you can use specialized remote repair ships, but I wouldn't guarantee the respawning waves won't target him at all, so try to avoid such a weak point if possible.

I've tried it both ways, and Level 3 missions in a Battlehships are like easy mode compared to using a battlecruiser. I can pretty much ignore enemy fire, even sitting still. Everything about the missions is easier in a battlehship. I have a larger tank, can cram more weapons on it, and carry more drones.
Maybe I just didnt have my battlecruiser properly fitted, I dont know. But I keep hearing people saying that battlecruisers are better for level 3s, but thats not my experience. IMO, Battlecruisers are if you dont have the money/skills to use a battleship.

Well...more frigates in L3s which can be tough for a BS to kill. Sure they pose no threat really but takes a little bit of time while your drones eat through them. If you can get the frigs at range then no problem of course.
Mostly it is easy mode for a BS because of long range guns. Then you can sit pretty much in one place and pop everything barely having to move.
I did some L3 missions in my Paladin (Marauder) to get a feel for it and it was laughably easy. In fact I kept popping my own wrecks as I'd tractor them in and one-shot cruisers while hitting F1-F4 such that the next gun would tag the next in line (the wreck).
If I am working up a new agent I generally go overkill in the L3s and skip looting them just so I can get to L4 ASAP.

Battleships should deal with them the same way Battlecruisers do....drones and small/medium class weapons. Theres nothing stopping a battleship from mounting frigate weapons to kill frigates. And even tech 1 drones can make short work of NPC frigates if you use them right.

Yeah, I tried that. Problem is, they close range so fast that I could only kill maybe one before they were inside my range.
But if I mount small weapons, I can pick them off in concert with my drones. Doing this I was able to turn over missions MUCH faster than I was doing it the old way (using missiles/large turrets). Not to mention, its also more fun. With tech 2 drones its a joke. No contest at all.
I mount at least one cruise launcher. Enemies 80km away? No problem. I aggro them with a single cruise missile and bring them to me. I can ignore their fire (30,000 point shield tank) and kill them when they get to 20km. Then tractor the wrecks if I feel like it.
kinda sucks on the missions where I have to actually travel to something. But my Ferox didnt really move that much faster, so little loss there.

Pretty much the same here. I am basically grinding Gallente faction right now, so I often just leave after I'm done. So the faster I can turn over missions, the better. And Battleships are faster.
But I remember when I first started doing Level 3s and everyone was telling me that Battle cruisers are better than Battleships. Totally wrong. Battleships are better in virtually every way.
