You have no idea how bad the British are!
Try living with them
"They are the rudest, meanest, worst-behaved, most linguistically incompetent and least adventurous holidaymakers"
"But the Germans are generally welcomed and topped the poll of tourist offices in 17 countries worldwide. "
Go go Germany!!!

Yes, local customs are part of the problem. But to me the biggest part of the problem is what someone views as good service. Until you've worked in the service industry whether it be in food, sales, or whatever, you really have no idea the kind of crap that they have to deal with day in and day out from people. So, good customer service is all relative. What one person percieved as excellent service the next thought was simply mediocre (sure it's spelled wrong). So, until you've walked a mile in that person's shoes you really shouldn't judge them on how good their service is. Maybe your expectations are just too high. We're all entitled to good and bad days. Just remember, the nicer you are to your waiter/ waitress whatever the case may be, the better service you're gonna get. Why would they want to go above and beyond for you when you're treating them horrible right off the bat. I've worked in the food industry to help get through college. It's not fun! But, it paid the bills and at least I was working and contributing member to society. It doesn't make me any less of a human being. And whatever happened to do unto others as you'd have done unto you? So, I'm just saying, step back and put yourself in their shoes for a bit.

Tell you what, you dont like the customs of a particular nation, dont visit it. Problem solved for everyone. If you cant spend five minutes to check the local customs of a nation, any nation, on the net and cant be willing to obsurve them, spend money when you have already spent alot to visit said nation in the first place then stay in your nation, in your pub, drinking your beer, eating your local dishes and enjoying your local customs because you sure as hell dont want to try another nations culture.
The world will happyly go on without you. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

How about you stop being a ****?
They're a human just like you, and you should respect them. Why do you want to be a ***** to them? Honestly? What have they done to you? Tried to bring you drinks, serve you food? Why not be nice to them, and then it's a lot nicer for them to be nice to you. *****. If they're not being as nice to you as you think the should be, don't counter with being rude, just be nice to them. They're probably sterotyping you as a foreign bad tipper, but if you're nice to them, they might think that you'll actually pay them what they should get. Not that you will anyways, because obviously you're still a giant ****ing douchebag.
If you don't want to accept local customs, don't travel. Period. Not everywhere in the world thinks the same way you do. I don't know why you're in your own thread *****ing and moaning about this, because it's a FACT OF LIFE. GET OVER IT.

The only brits people ever seem to notice are the loudmouthed chavs, boy-racers, football hooligans and the posh, snobby tuxedo-wearing businesspeople.
Yes many brits could do some research on local customs and actually tip (Most don't because they just arn't aware of it) but at the same time to give them terrible service just because you've figured from their accent that they're not likely to tip or to some prejudice (like what happened to the OP by the sounds of things) and making them feel as unwelcome as possible dosen't exactly help relations either.
Every country has it's idiots.

okay, from the British perspective, a tip is something you earn, not something that's automatic. The guys who deliver pizza in this country don't expect a tip, though I tend to give one anyway if they turn up fast and I'm doing okay financially.
There's a logical flaw to the American attitude, as a brit sees it. You say "they don't get paid well, so tips are what they live off"
We say "Then they should lobby for better pay, and treat the tips as a bonus".
Of course, the customs are so firmly entrenched on both sides of the pond that neither side can really pursuade the other. From each of our perspectives, it's perfectly logical for the world to operate that way.
So stop arguing that the custom's stupid, already. A custom is a custom, and a few sharp words on the internet aren't about to shift the perspectives of nations. - Verin "Stitcher" Hakatain. |

This topic has come up before about bar tenders and tips. I did a little research and asked all the bar tenders I know, which is more then 30. Close to 100% of them new about the European customs of tipping and new what to expect and how to better ensure that a European would tip. I know fewer servers but I can also tell you that a majority of them did not know about European tipping customs.
Here is what you do when you eat in a restaurant in the US.
- 10-15% is acceptable if you were satisfied with the service
- 20+% if the service is exceptional.
- 0-10% depending on how bad/jaded the server was.
Some things to take in consideration when going out in the US.
- Table to server ratio. If you notice that a server is working more then 4 tables you should expect slower service and not tip down for that. Unless the server is a jaded a$$.
- Time of day.
- Cleanliness of the establishment. If the place is not up to par do not expect good service. Eat, tip what you think is acceptable, or not, then leave and do not return
Outside of those. If you are a demanding a$$ and the server has had bad experiences with tourists in general, due not just expect bad service. Your best bet is to cut your losses, get, up and leave
So in conclusion. If you do not get the concept or refuse to understand how salaries and tips work in the service industry in the US, then you should either expect bad service or just not use it.
Oh yes for a little comic cultural education, for better or worse, check out the movie Waiting. This is a pretty good look at what you are speaking of.
P.S. If you are unwilling to pay a tip for whatever ****ty a$$ reason when in the states when you know the situation, then do not tip. You just better be nice and do not ever return to the same place twice.
