When you miss target with e.g. lasers, projectiles guns, etc... where does the projectile go? Would be nice to see that accidentally you will hit your gang member behind you target when blobbed or in large fleet battles, this would be actually probably nice buff for missiles, what you think? :) __________________________________ I do it myyyy wayyyy... The chance that these projectiles will hit anything in any critical way is very very very low. The chance that calculating all this will create lots and lots of lag is very very very high.
Do the math.

sorry dude, thats just mathmatically impossible =). with all the weapons, ships and drones it should be an exponential algorithm.
Assume worstcase n ships, n*8 weapons n*5 drones. every weapon would cast a ray, which has to be checked for collision with every entity, thats n*6 collision checks. Each collision check needs around 10 operations in 3D. After that you gotta sort all positive collisions for distance. thats a nasty root function (again lots of operations) for each hit and then some kind of insertion sort ~n^2 algorithm. That all for each shot of each of the n*8 weapons.
have fun =)

Calculations would make for some stutter as the server tries to keep up.
How about having missiles, in flight when target disappears (dies / jumps), explode with the force and range of a small smartbomb wherever they happen to be. A limited uncontrollable AoE effect.
As for guns .. trajectories are demanding to calculate, we don't even have proper to-hit mechanics as it is, less is sometimes better.

forget it, AoE weapons cause alot of lag, at least according to the devs. as for missing shots, well it would be cool to have at least a decent animation that shows that you missed, anything else has been mentioned.

would be cool if you did see a graphical miss, so the laser just fires off into something, the railgun projectile disappears into distant space, and artillery... whatever?
The projectile dealing critical damage would be a bit ******ed though. Oh I missed my rat, oh I accidentially hit a retreiver. Hi concord!
