Anyone have first-hand experience with this?
I have been living up in the mountains for a couple weeks now working at a resort/camp in the Sierra Nevadas (California) and just recently I found the cabin I have been living in has a pretty decent mice problem (not a big surprise since it is the forest). But to add to my worry I am finding a huge load of droppings between the bed and the wall which I just found today.
I also thought it was just one mouse but I have caught two within the past 5 hours of setting traps. So now I think there is more than just one or two.
I have been checking up websites like the CDC and plan on taking some actions in the morning to clean the place up. Anyone have any other suggestions?

A little of rat poison should do the trick. We had this massive rat in our garden that just refused to leave, and after whacking it with a bit of wood, trying to shoot it with the air gun we just tried the normal way. A liitle bit of posion in the shrubbery and it was dead in the pond the next day.
Just put little bits at evvry possible entrance to the cabin, every crack etc. They come in pellet form. Fail that board up the windows and prepare for a long siege.

Yeah there are much more than two now, this is worse than I thought. I was just woken up once again by one mouse eating the peanut butter off his dead friend's nose. AND just as I write this one went off behind my head. That scared the **** out of me. I am down to one trap now and 3 mice in the past 6 hours.

VERMIN! Most rodents don't carry hanta virus but they're still not exactly sanitary. The cuteness of some of them notwithstanding, you need to either stun or kill them manually with blunt object after you've run out of traps, and discard them outdoors. Scrub down the spot where you attack the vile creatures afterward to ensure no bacteria or whatnot remains.
It's sort of unfortunate. I don't really like killing enterprising animals who inhabit our settlements to escape the brutal outdoors, but if you're stuck up on a mountain you gotta do what you gotta do.

To be honest I was alright with them living here, until I read up on the disease. Now I am going to have to go into siege mode and get more traps, bleach the areas where I found their droppings and where I found their main hole.
These little guys keep me awake too, they make all sorts of noise so I am either going to have to REALLY come down on them, or change cabins, but I don't think it will change much. Most of the hanta virus cases are in the western US, which is what is causing me to go after these guys, but what I thought was one mouse has just turned into 3 dead ones, and another running around (I am more than certain there are even more now).

Get a cat. Seriously, if you are running out of traps that fast you likely have quite the infestation. A cat is like an intelligent mouse trap that actively seeks out and pods the mice in your cabin. Whats more when the cat loots the mouse wreck you wont have to refuel it as often.
Are you a guest or employee at this resort/camp? If a guest file a complaint. If an employee see if you can get the resort/camp to pay for the cat or see if you if your fellow employees are experiencing the same problem and if you can split the cost of the cat. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

We actually have two kittens that are around 6 months old (young cats now), I may ask one of my fellow employees if I can borrow one. But the problem is I don't want to have to loot the mouse wrecks myself and I also don't want to find these cats giving me presents on my bed.

Edited by: Slade Trillgon on 24/02/2009 16:37:55 Just remember that with poison, if you have a true wall/crawl space infestation, that many times the mice will eat the poison and still make it back to their hiding place, making it very difficult to clear bodies.
I recommend that you stick with the mechanical traps. Get a good number of them and set them in places like behind a refrigerator, under all sinks, all corners, back of low lying cabinets, backs of storage closets, and just about every other place that you find with traces of mouse presence.
Once the situation is under better control you can get rid of a majority of the external traps, but keep most of the out of site traps armed until spring time. Once springtime arrives the situation should really clear up. At which point you can check the exterior of the house and look at cleaning up the base of the house if necessary and patching any and all potential entry points that you can find or think may be a problem. All of that may be unnecessary if you do not plan on being their next winter and/or if you have a good landlord.

Be careful when ninja looting a cats kill, the argo lasts longer than 15 minutes and they somehow manage to get kill rights on you. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

Problem with cats:
We have two.
We had a rat living in our kitchen for several months before one of them left it's partly-looted "wreck" on the living room laminate floor.
Rodents will hide from cats but if you have the cat in there the mice will likely at least stay out of sight (prey animals learn to stay away from predators because the ones that don't tend not to breed).
On the subject of poison: it's not instant (most are warfarin-based and cause death through internal bleeding) so 9/10 times the llittle buggers will crawn back to their nest and die there - leading to smells that can be described as "vile"
Traps work but only once - you should always dispose of a trap once it's made a kill - this can get expensive.
In my view the best option would be to borrow the cat but expect a long siege.

Maybe a combination of both cat and trap would work? Cat keeps the mice on the sidelines, killing the ones that stray too far out, traps catch the rest. Traps would likely have to be the covered "live catch" type to avoid hurting the cat (cat paw + spring loaded trap = ****ed off owner). -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

Or the dreadnaught solution. Tear the place up and manually remove their nest. Then block up all entrances and above all, keep any source of food far away. Applying copious amounts of room spray to mark your territory and generally making your place a uncomfortable one to live in will motivate the mice to go away. -------- Ideas for: Mining

Wanna borrow my dog? He's taken over the mousing business since the cat retired. He's already gotten 6 in the last month including a nest we found burrowed in the hay stack. And he's damn good too. I've watched him dig them up out of the ground.

I went into siege mode today.
I clocked in, got a ton of bleach in a bucket, 5 traps, a vacuum, gas-mask, two tubes of sealant, a drill, and wood.
Took me all day to clean the mountains of mouse crap on the floor, I was worried about the hanta virus since it is given to humans via mouse *****. Their holes are blocked up, any remaining mice are now sealed out, if they come back in they hit traps. Fortunately this is a one room cabin, without a fridge just a bunch beds, and desks.
If it comes down to it I will be using more traps, then going to the cat solution. But my biggest issue was the literal piles of mouse crap that I cleared out.

Also around the holes/gaps you may want to try steel wool. They don't like it.

This is the first night going to sleep after siege mode. The smell of bleach still clings to the air around me.
Today's battle tally is: -two sealed entrance ways -trails/entrance ways heavily bleached and mouse droppings removed. -6 traps in place (some were bleached as well by accident and that started making some of the metal corrode). -And one semi-ruined long sleeve shirt that I got some bleach on.
The attackers have been repelled, their initially assault resulted in three of their deaths, and their use of bio-warfare has yet to be determined as effective. Sov has been transferred back into my hands and the entrance systems are cyno-jammed. Gate camps have been placed around entrance systems and high traffic zones. May this battle finally end in peace!

Don't die of chemical inhalation due to improperly ventilated rooms saturated with cleaning agents. You will become food for the rodentia.

I had the windows/doors open all day as I was laying down the bleach, I have one window open a little now. I may open a second so I get a draft in here.

Welp, the first night has passed. I slept all the way through it without any mice waking me up; either by running around or killing themselves in traps.
I have yet to check on the traps around the room but if none are sprung that is a good sign.
