Nice! I see you put seats in... where does the escape pod sit?
I should probably say that I honestly beleive that CCP came up with the whole idea that you "never leave your pod even in the ship or station" because noone could be bothered to draw human models ;)

True - id say the scale is close though. He has 4 seats in his scetch of the ****pit and if you scale that up to the size of the kestrel model then its getting on for the size of a modern day jet liner. I agree that if the kestrel is indeed supposed to be the size of a 747 that perhaps its a bit small but its close, not a million miles off.

Escape pod! What are you, some sort of fool? Why allow an expendable pilot to escape when all that expensive electronic equipment has to be saved?
Nice model though, I'd like to see the finished one.

If I remember correctly the rifter is the smallest of all the frigates and is supposed to be slightly larget than a 747 in scale. So when you think about the rest of the ships in EVE take that into consideration. None of the ships are small.
If you haven't all ready seen it try and find the ship scale image that someone made awhile ago, there is a version that includes all ships including titans to scale and one that only goes up to dreadnaughts. On the dreadnaught one it includes some items for reference like a person and the eiffel tower.

The Kestrel is 78 meters long which is much larger than a Rifter and slightly longer than the longest 747 (there are several variations).
The ship is scaled correctly according to CCP specifications. Please don't turn the thread into a scale discussion =)
I'll be posting another update tonight and answering everyone in this thread. Thank you. |

Yeah, the scale is spot-on.
And you should have mentioned you wanted to model an old-school kessy in the OP, then we wouldn't have all this pod-whining.
Loving it so far, keep up the good work!

You should have the two aft seats facing the side of the 'room' to electronic's navigation readouts no reason to have 4 pilots when you can have an weapons officer and a comms man. =============

Because it looks cool :)
Also like I said, my inspiration for working on the Kestrel was the Millenium Falcon.

Quote: Very nice, but I have to wonder about your design for the engine. Seems a little incongruous for Caldari tech to mean chunky and square on the outside, and all rounded and steampunk inside.
Still, it's your artistic creation - do whatever you like! I approve of what you've done thus far.
Like I said in the CGTalk thread I wanted to stylize it. For example, I don't believe that any truly military ship in the eve-universe would have any exposed cables and the plate would be much deeper. So I considered: Which ship would best suit my needs to "stylize" it? A Cargo frigate with missile defensive systems and an horizontal design did fit the bill very well.
I was careful with the engine though. You'll notice that although it looks very old, there's absolutely no apparent manual movement anywhere, or indications that it could be pumping liquid from the valves, etc. For reference, my gf assisted me with the design and she studies mechanical engineering.
The final design will look a bit more clean than you think, but that's the style I chose :).

Donations are always, always welcome. Even 10m! I'm very poor.
Quote: Wow. Guess I might as well delete my in-progress Kestrel, I think you're well on your way to making the perfect high-detail version.
Don't, keep doing your work. I have a very important project to start as soon as I'm done with the bridge/****pit/etc so I don't think I'll ever finish the Kestrel (nor did I originally plan to) unless CCP hires, chains me, and forces me to do it |

Looks good, only thing I'd suggest is to add some smaller details. Right now, it's kind of hard to get a good sense of the scale, it's hard to tell if it's a capital ship, slightly large fighter, etc. The Kestrel kind of fits in the middle ground: big enough to have small details like handholds, small cables, access plates, etc, be tiny, but not so big that they disappear completely. Doors and windows are also good, since we know intuitively what size they're supposed to be, giving the rest of the ship more of a context. -----------

Merin please the thread linked in the OP. Scale will be pretty clear as Frug stated.
And if I draw smaller details I'd go insane. I'm already using a milimeter scale to make all the screws.

Three words for you:
EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT.
Fantastic job.
I had sketched a kessie pit once but for a pod ship and it is very close to this. The pod sits where you have the engine (I had always assumed the "engine" would be somewhere at the back where the ...ehr... engines are?). But there are still seats as in yours and where you placed the gravity generator I had placed the pod exit/entry point. My version was a two decked pit/bridge as due to the pit "front window" covering more than on level. I was going to sketch a whole ship schematic and I had started on the communication array module where I imagined the crews "cabins" would be, but I gave up.
And seeing your work I am glad I did as you went to far more details and apparently possess modeling skills far beyond my own.
