Why hello thar. So a while ago my Ex who I hadn't talked to in about a month or so, sent me a real angst filled email about how much of a a jerk I was, and how we would never ever be friends again. It was generally a pretty insulting email, and I was a little emo over it, but then I decided to not let it get to me, and me and a few friends tried to come up with a lulzy response. What we decided on was Liam Nessons speech from Taken. (btw, they were next to me when I sent it, so I guess I have witnesses, if this somehow goes to court)
"I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you."
Now, I read her blog today, and apparently she thinks I am ACTUALLY threatening to kill her, and contacted her campus security. I am now barred from her campus, and supposedly they will contact me and tell me not to contact her again. I had no intentions of talking to her, or messing with her, or anything else to her after that last email, but uh seriously? Could someone actually interpret that as a death threat?
And is it just me, or is this absolutely hilarious? --- This forum is problematic.

It's priceless. Presumably you sent it to her uni mail address, and presumably she reported it to the IT admins. Presumably someone like me had to try and keep a straight face whilst reading that mail, and it only made it to security because the admin had a buddy in security that he new would crack up at this obvious movie reference to an emo-rage email.

A case of a good joke gone bad. Suggest she see the film so she understands it's a joke. Obviously she missed it, and out of context it could be taken literally (and obviously was). It's very hard to get across the nuances we take for granted in our speech, on the Internet. Maybe more smilies would help!? -------------

Yeah, I actually didn't think her blog allowed public comments, but hey, it's a public blog, so I didn't do anything wrong. At least in the eyes of the law... I don't think.
Oh I know I'm not 100% in the right in this, I mean my email DID say "I will kill you" but uh, the context of it makes NO sense whatsoever.
Also, I'm not exactly the threatening type... I weigh like 110 pounds. Gusts of wind can take me in a fight, and she used to play field hockey. I mean, she did know me for 6 years, I think I can safely say in that time I never gave of the pyscho-stalker vibe. If anything I gave off the "says stupid **** for lulz" vibe.

Haha yeah, oh well. I didn't do anything illegal, it's a public blog, I put a link up. She'll probably just make another post about this, saying how ridiculous it is, and how childish I am or some such bull****. Oh well, I fixed it by posting a screen shot of the blog now. Same difference.
The way I see it, if she wants to get me barred from her campus fine. If she tries to take it to the police? Well I don't think I could be convicted of anything, like I said, I have witnesses, who saw me send the email. --- This forum is problematic.

I laughed at the quote, but you may have shot yourself in the foot here.
The trouble is, this note seems to be taken very seriously by the college campus, as well as your ex herself. This may rebound on you in years to come should you ever need to go to court for any reason. People are very good at digging up the past to find this sort of thing.
For instance, should you ever find yourself in a divorce court, some lawyer's researcher could find this and use it against you, and be used to justify whoever keeps custody of any children. If they're good, they could paint you as a psycho. The defence of 'it was a joke' doesn't usually tend to wash in courts, and judge's don't tend to appreciate film quotes.
The trouble is, you've only been guilty of misjudging your audience. However, when dealing with these sorts of situations, humour is rarely a good option. She may have taken this completely the wrong way, but all the college will see is a note with a death threat on it, and a possibly homicidal ex-boyfriend. Her mental state doesn't matter in this situation, only what has been written down, because that is all they will care about.
I would try to clear the air myself, try to reason it out, because that record marking you out as a potential psycho will remain on their system until someone comes looking for it.
Despite what I have outlined above, I wouldn't get too worried about it either, as probably nothing will happen. I have just outlined a potential problem.

In these cases it dosen't really matter how you said something, what the context was, whether it was a joke or not. Only that you said it:
Quote: I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.
