I picked up the 14 day trial and I really like what I see. I've ran all of the tutorial missions and yet I have no clue what I'm doing, what certain things do, and what other things mean.
I feel like the tutorial gave me the bare basics and then just threw me out into space. I'm finding myself asking "What in god's name do I do next?"
Is there a New Player Guide that dumbs the game down to the very last detail, to its core even? I tried the "New Player Guide" stickied in this forum, but it didn't help much.
I'm wanting to know stuff like, "What's a drone?" , "How do I know what to buy" , "Do I go hunt things?", "How do I 'level'?", "How in god's name do I get out of this newb ship?", "When I get out of this newb ship, which type of ship should I buy?", etc. etc.
Is there a guide that pretends I'm the most illiterate child on earth and that I'm going to need a lot of explaining? If so, I need it...badly.

To start with you can read the info in the top post here in this forum. The Help channel and your corp channel can also be valuable resources. You can also ask questions in Local and normally some one will help you out.

Edited by: Stellus on 12/08/2004 03:14:28 Thanks. Like I said, I'm -really- enjoying the game. It's just hard for me to figure out what the heck I'm doing =)
I'll take a look at the other posts at the top, but for the most part, they weren't detailed enough for me to get a grasp as to what they were talking about.
Does anyone know if the Prima Strategy Guide for this game is any good? I know the stats will be outdated, but as far as getting a grasp of what things are, is it good?
Thanks for the help =)

Another player was kind enough to pass on this link to me.
http://members.cox.net/webcore/eve/
Eve is one of those games that only take a day to learn but a lifetime to master. The crux of Eve is basically its a life simulator. You can pursue any path you would in real life. Technical, Military, Outlaw, Manufacturing, Hauling, Scientific, Menial (mining.)
When you first start out in game the easiest jobs are mining and hauling, those are the lowest jobs on the totem pole that you need to master first.
Second ring of skills you need to master is your own security. You do that by killing NPC's for a while as "law enforcement" then you can move on from there to PvP (player vs player) as either a pirate or a pirate hunter.
Way off in the future you can get involved with manufacturing and scientific pursuits, start your own corporation, build ships, etc, but its not something you're gonna do during your 14 day trial.
Read that link and good luck.

I'm planning on extending my 14 day trial to a permanent status . I could use this good read.

another thing you can do is pick up stuff that's left in asteroid belts after a fight. A lot of times, experienced players will leave it laying around and when you come to a belt where some cans (non-secured) from NPC's are floating, you can put the stuff they hold in your cargohold and sell it at a station. That way you can make some money to buy a better ship if you're not really fond of mining or not strong enough for hunting yet.
I never said I was healthy |

well, in order for you to get into a new ship, you'll need isk... and the best way for you to get isk is either mining (boring) or doing agent missions...personally i prefer doing agent missions over mining as it teaches you more....you'll develop tactics and strategies and get more familiar with what certain modules do and how to use them....you'll need that knowledge later on in the game..... ------------------------------------------------

Hooking up with a corp. can really help you. They can provide guidance, resources and protection while you get your "space legs."

there are two types of drones .. combat and mining of mining there are a few diff types, and with combat drones there are alot of diff types. difference is size they take up in your ships drone hold (if you ship can carry drones) and how much HP and how much dmage they do etc.. you need skills to use the diff types, check market - items - skills - drones - right click for info
you never know what to buy... :P there is too much choice, too many regions to check, too many price differences ..a bloody nightmare .. but it gets a little easier over time, and the complexity is what makes its a fun challenge and what allows there to be profit to be made.
you do not level in eve. you train skills ( which i hope you have found already) you buy new skills on the market.
you can hunt things .. but in your newb ship .. i wouldnt bother. either mine in 0.9-1.0 systems and sell the ore, or buy the refining skills and refine the ore to minerals and sell the minerals. probably can bet better isk from the ore.. but you will need to do calculations to ascertain that.
once you get a higher ship you can hunt asteroid belts for npc pirates.
agent missions are great way to learn the game in a structured environment. there are many diff types of agents .. combat - trade - science , etc,, right click on any npc corp .. and see the agents tabs. you can pick who you work for .. atm i would stay working with the same corp as it will raise your standing with them .. leading to higher level agents.

To add to this, while menial - Hauling and Mining for yourself/others is generally the most profitable business to get into.
If you get yourself a big hauler ship, you'll occasionally find people interested in hiring you for hauling services. When people ask me to do so, I 'charge' 400-500k isk/hr if they're very fast at mining, but if it's a new player, I'll just help them out of kindness.
I won't comment on the other available roles, since I haven't gotten past the point of being a miner (I find it fun, oddly enough). I do intend to get into NPC (Pirate.. rat..whatever) hunting. I hear that's also quite fun and can be profitable if you play protector in low-sec space.
I'd suggest you get yourself into a corp as soon as you can - and choose carefully. Power Corrupts Corp is a good one, but I'm biased ;) ------------ Elucidate - Extraordinarily Lazy Miner |

Quote: I feel like the tutorial gave me the bare basics and then just threw me out into space. I'm finding myself asking "What in god's name do I do next?"
Is there a New Player Guide that dumbs the game down to the very last detail, to its core even? I tried the "New Player Guide" stickied in this forum, but it didn't help much.
I'm wanting to know stuff like, "What's a drone?" , "How do I know what to buy" , "Do I go hunt things?", "How do I 'level'?", "How in god's name do I get out of this newb ship?", "When I get out of this newb ship, which type of ship should I buy?"
If You find yourself asking such question , you have to consider the possibility that perhaps another game with more simplistic and linear playstyle would be more suited for your needs.
Arguing with EVE customer support is like chatting up stewardess on the plane - you know you're not gonna get any , but it's still hella fun trying |

While this is a possibility, I think what is more likely is that he is greatly intrigued by the complexity of the game, yet needs a guide to get started. My first week in the game, I was the same way (now I'm in week 3, where I'm using frigates in .5 space to hunt NPC rats, and got ganked for the first time the other day in my first PvP conflict :) )
I, for one, am greatly looking forward to exploring the ins and outs of this game as I continue to buy and train skills and make isk.

Terrible thing to say - almost calling him an idiot out-right. I asked the same questions myself, and I'm sure you did, too. I ask these same questions every time I try an online game. Everyone does, regardless of how much they've learned from the forums. Don't squash people because you feel like it. No one knows what to do/buy in the first week or so. I only had a better start because I spent 2 weeks playing in the beta.

I went out and finished up some missions and they helped me out immensly. I'm finally starting to get out of the "OMG Newb Freakout" stage and into the somewhat comfortable level of gameplay.
I think I got the gist of things and the basics are starting to come around better. I like complexity and EvE has it. But it's organized and precise complexity that gets easier as you go, unlike SWG which was complex but mind bogglingly disorganized.
Thanks for the offer Elucidate, but I'm not of the Gallente race. Appreciate it though

Stellus, feel free to contact me in game if you have questions. If I don't know the answer, I can quickly get it.
As far as the ships thing goes, many corps will supply you with a better frigate to help you get started. Mine does, and if you want to go that route I could discuss that with you as well. I handle most of the recruiting for my corp. (we don't allow pirates in our corp, so if thats something you want to do we aren't an option, but I have friends who like that sort of thing I could put you in contact with)

i'd also like to say thanks for the above advice, i'm also new to the game and the topic title is about what i'm feeling too.. but i like the fact that it's confusing.. it means there is alot more to learn :D one thing that struck me about this game from my first couple of hours on it last night to reading these forums is just how helpfull people are. i felt realy unprepared not having a manual to flick through when ever i felt confused (apart from the PDF on the disc) but people in the Rookie channel were wonderfull.. and supreemly patient to put up with the seemingly endless "im new.. help!" requests. i'm looking for a new ship too.. not sure if i quite need one yet but i'm looking (hint hint ;) lol ) everything seems sooooo expensive though.. but i suppose if they wern't, the game would get boring real quick.
it's definatly a refreshing change from Star Wars Galaxies and much more my kind a game :D

Arguing with EVE customer support is like chatting up stewardess on the plane - you know you're not gonna get any , but it's still hella fun trying |

Yes, I agree. The community is extremely helpful with new players. I think it's safe to say that the EvE community is by far the friendliest I've seen in an MMO. The Rookie Help chat channel was extremely patient with the mass amount of trial users in-game.
Thanks to everyone for the help and to psssdoff for his generous donation. Good luck out in the deep black sea of outer space!

Not to get too personal but Nilit's prolly a power gamer.
NC was the most powerful faction in PS, and Amarr has the best stats in Eve with a 3 in CHA and the very best starting Indy.
Prolly played a Necro in Everquest too, but then again didn't we all?

Dunno about being powergamer ,, I do have a full-time job and a casual relationship I did play both Vanu and Terran in Planetside before playing NC , so the term I belive you are looking for is bandwagoner Btw my character is Minmatar , not Amarr as it says below my portrait Never played Everquest thank god for that

Well I remember the first weeks on eve and now 4 and a bit months in I am still finding new things out If your in problems why not just ask in local I know if I'm in local and someone asked for help I'd try to help them the same as people did for me. joining a corp helped also as they talked me through a lot. I find most people are willing to help a newb and pass on valuable info and remember to always have fun
