Hi. Last night i was playing with the probing system again. I found a sig and got a core probe down to 0.25AU @ 100% str with a distance of 2000,000km. I dropped another core on the sig and got the red circle and a 50% str. Probe 3 gave 1 red dot and a Strength of about 88% and with probe 4 i got to a max of 96% with a red dot.
I checked each probe individually and they reported 100% str.
No matter what i did i couldnt get a 100% hit. skills are Astrometics 3 Astrometric Triangulation 3
Any ideas?
TIA

Add some more probes.

Bring the probes really close to the target. That helps sometimes.

More probes will not increase strength.
As said you could try to bring the probes closer but a 4% gap is fairly large. It's possible that you will need better skills (Astrometric Triangulation and Covert Ops). ---------------------------------------- A Guide to Scan Probing in Revelations |

Edited by: The Snowman on 03/03/2009 11:16:10 Edited by: The Snowman on 03/03/2009 11:15:58 I see a lot of complaints about this, but I never have the problem! so Im gona take a wild stab in the dark as to whats going on.
When you have a red-sphere, the temptation is to put 4 probes smack in the middle! - This, I beleive is wrong.
You must put your probes in a CROSS or PLUS shape around the signal!
Viewing top down.
..0. 0x0 ..0.
0 = probe x = red sphere
Hope that helps

Thanks for the replies. I should probably have said i had 4 probes on it, in a tetrahedral formation around the red dot. the side of the control widget cubes ber just about touching each other.
Im guessing from whats been said that i simply didnt have the skill / bonus combo to lcok it down. odd that all 4 probes each had a sig str of 100% when used individually.

its not about skills. i have them enough to launch 4 probes and i can get targets. think of it like this. how would you find a site in RL if you had this capability.

Ah ha the cryptic 'I know but im not telling' poast
Ive found several sites in the past week or so, with lower skills. Its not that i dont understand the trilateration involved, or what the interface is giving back. The method ive used has worked in the past. but this time it didnt, even though all probes were reporting 100% individually.

Edited by: The Snowman on 03/03/2009 12:29:37 hmm, then maybe it is to do with skill but there is a bug reporting the 100% ?
Im just gona have to keep scanning until I come across your problem.
Personally, if you get this problem again my instinct would be to move your probes AWAY from the signal, so that the dot is just INSIDE the probes bubble, for EACH probe.
As such
Instead of this

ccp tried to go hardcore with deviation implementation on long range probe and has introduced about 3 new bugs

Sadly, this is wrong and misleading. I fit out a battlecruiser with a core probe launcher to zip about just in case I ever got trapped in a wh. Went scanning with it, whilst it scanned down the vast majority of sites without issue it was not able to scan down certain harder sites that I could scan down when I returned in my cov ops later to check.

Well if it is down to the Skills and ship bonuses, then thats cool. I agree that they should count and if it means people in regular ships with low skills waste hours trying to lock a sig they simply cant, then thats a cool mechanic imho.
I have a feeling that this new scanning system is going to become a preocupation of mine, so skills will get trained, and im planning to get in to cov ops very soon anyway.
