First off, ignore people saying that you MUST have a bpo at ME over 40. SOmeone already posted a calculator , i haven't checked it but still once you hit ME 20 things the returns seem to come down to a tri here a pyerite there. Insanely high ME is the result of stupidity or boredom. Just don't do it.
Also the suggestion that you max out your skills before even bothering to make anything is insane. I've never maxed out my skills but have always made and sold stuff. I've always made a profit of no less then 10%. Thats 10% minimum due to stupid fools competing to hard and killing profits.
What you need to know is that all minerals, mined by you or by anyone else has a value. The value can change day to day but it still has a value that you can find by looking at the average going rate for that mineral on the market. Take that average and you now have the value of your minerals. That can then help you calculate how much isk you have made by mining.
Once you know how much your minerals are worth look at bpos and do the math. Look at the average going rate for that bpo's product and compare it to what you could produce it for. IF the product's average going rate is not production cost+10% , you shouldn't bother making it. If you make something and sell it at production cost you are a fool and should sell your minerals on the market instead.
Now you should work on your production skills but level 5s are not a prerequisite to actual production. Just make sure that you're making a profit and continue working on the skills while you make that isk.
Always move away from trade hubs like jita. Most people are selling their stuff for production cost or slightly above. Of course if you do your homework and know your own production costs you'll quickly spot places where you shouldn't be selling. The further you move away from the trade hubs the higher the sale price should be.
Dont be afraid of profits! Production costs +10% is the minimum at which you should be selling at. What the maximum is based upon the players in the area, their isk flow and distance from a trade hub. If you are selling in an L4 mission hub around 10<give or take a few> jumps from a hub, you can tack on a premium for ammo.
The reasoning behind that is a mission runner could make 10-15 mil an hour and jumping to and from a hub could take at least 20minutes. Assuming a round trip were to merely take 20 minutes the mission runner lost 3-5mil he could have made + cost of the ammo off of the market. If he buys 5mil in ammo, which is peanuts for him, thats a net loss of 10mil isk.
If the seller is netting 10% profit that would be 500k from that mission runner. Now if you sold the ammo at the runner's station and raised the prices so the total cost of the ammo is 6mil the mission runner will buy it up.The reason is he is actually saving isk by saving time which he can then put into doing another mission so its a gain of 3-4 mil on the mission runner's end and a 1.5mil profit for yourself.
REMEMBER<!!!!!!!!!> you don't need max skills or crazy ME 100+ bpo to make a profit! Just make sure to do your math and find a good place to sell. Non hubs of any kind can quickly become one if you are filling in gaps in the market! Good luck out there and don't let the idiots that cannot do basic math get you down. just rotate the bpos. oh and ammo is a good way to get started, thats how i started and I think i make a decent profit off of my half assed production.
