In acient times crop burning was a valid war tactic. I wonder if introducing a way to destroy enemy asteriod feilds might bring a interesting new lvl of gameplay to EVE? What do you think?
Mabey sitting one system over destroying a few billion ISK in ARK resource could motivate them to come out of their stations and safe spots? Also perhaps this might make wars a little more "winable" becuase the team that has nothing to mine probably has little to fight with as well.
What are some ways that such an idea might be implemented if at all? Perhaps some sort of destructo-mining beam? Or some sort of anchorable devices that just saps the asteriods over time (without mining them for use). Bombs?
I know a lot of people come up with fanciful notions about what eve could do all the time, but toy with this one a little. What do you think would be good or bad about it? How might it be implemented?
I for myself would suggest that this probably shouldn't be possible in empire space, but possibly in .4 down, and certainly in 0.0. I am not sure how hard it should be to destroy asteriods or what sort of fitting a mod that could do such a thing would take. Any ideas?

Wouldn't mining their belts do the trick, harvesters set off mines don't they??

Mines cant be used anymore. They dont fit in any launchers. Plus:
- they are useless for doing damage against anything - they create lots and lots of lag - the only use they have is for creating lots and lots of lag
As for the thread... might be nice idea actually.
Check out Minedrill Corp's description:
Quote: Minedrill traces its history back to the war with the Federation, to a special force unit within the Caldari Navy that rigged asteroids with explosives and used them as booby traps. After the war the personnel in the unit created Minedrill and used their special knowledge to quickly gain prominence within the mining industry.
They put explosives in asteroids. Maybe this could be implemented. Putting explosives into asteroids that, when a mining laser is activated, creates a huge explosion destroying frigates within 12 km, maiming anything else severely, and destroying most things at very close range. It would have to be expensive and time consuming to do this though, and require lots of skills.

I have always found it odd you couldn't destroy roids in some way other than mining them...
like maybe special ammo that does damage to roids...
could be simple as simply destroying ore from the roid, eventually collapsing it...
could be used as a means to make the belt reset more quickly than just mining out the crap ores the old fashioned way.
I figure maybe you could have a "Penetrating Explosive" type projectile(damaging the roid by penetrating into it, and exploding), a Varying Thermal Laser crystal(damaging it by controlled heat variation... or something.) a special penetrating kinetic-explosive missile like the projectile... a tectonic torp(BIG missile one... take out a big rock in one shot) not sure how to call the hybrid one... anyway.. thats how I think I'd do it.

Not a bad Idea, until someone starts "arming" roid fields in high security zones for the hell of it (despite the expense) killing noobs to the point that the forums are full of topics about how they need a nerf blah blah blah....
If there is a way around the later then Im for it

i dont think 'razing' them would work cause u no they respawn on dt (well some of them) but the asteroid mien thing is cooL (how bout isteand of sending the ore back to the ship it just sent back some explosives with it :D) but not have everyhting within 12k range... and it would ahve to take a long time for them to arm, say an hour (cause i mean sometimes u can get in nme space easy when they arent on, ive got to ark palces my self...) and ofcourse have them be a punishable when deployed in .0 space >< but i kinda liek it anyway >< sounds cool

mOostradomus,
Hyperinfaltion or just inflation is when the buying power of a unit of currency decreases as the amount of dollars over-all increases Aye? How does destroying asteriods cause inflation? It definitly might incrase the price of minerals though.
What I am thinking of is a sort of turret that could do a LOT of damage in terms of mining, but would yeild no ore. Or as someone suggested just special ammo or crystals that could do damage to asteriods and have asteriods have HPS.

Edited by: Titan AE on 13/08/2004 01:58:45 I really wonder if the price of the higer end minerals would go up much from implementing a way to destroy asteriods. Obviously if you decrease supply and keep demand the same price rises. Sometimes however following that simple theory can lead one to overly simple examinations of a given circumstance. Without having a clear argument for the case I feel a little suspicious that perhaps the prices might not climb too much.
Being able to raze asteriod fields would help PVP a bit though. Eveis very permeable in terms of keeping people out of an area, and people can simply choose not to fight. However if a group calls an area home I think they'd be very inclined to fight for their resources. Might do good things for PVP. I should say for the record too that I am a base mineral miner, I really wouldn't see any personal benifit in seeing mega or zyd prices go up.

we've actually engaged in such a strip-mining operation against the Nefantar. 2 of 6 belts stripped this week. they're getting angry ;P -- Jump Drive Operation / Rank 5 / SP: 1280000 of 1280000

Great idea...might need some seriuos thinking added to it tho. This is the sort of thing that needs to be implemented sooner or later.

Ore respawning has always been a problem in this game...and you propose to add a way to make it worse Titan? I thought about this a bit...last June...and then realized that there wouldn't be a single roid left in empire space because a % of people would find it fun to destroy every rock, especially in systems for new players. If you want to destroy your enemies ore...mine it out. Then you make isk at the same time. --Missa New Siggy to Come Soon(tm) |

I like the idea of a boobytrap, make it an entity like a deployable. Hell make it a deployable depending on how much you want to spend.
Type A: A rigged asteroid, need I say more? With the proper equipment (a new drone or somthing along those lines) you can disarm it. Small warhead only destorying the asteroid. Quick deployment and uses an existing asteroid. Only purpose is to remove that roid from their field and offset the refresh.
Type B: Offensive rigged asteroid (light) This asteroid has been rigged with an energy phase generator or some other bs like that. Damages the miner or drone disabling it (1%hp left). Confusing for those who don;t pay attention. Yet again can be dissabled by the proper equipment. Still uses an exsisting asteroid.
Type C: Explosive Destorys the asteroid and creates a shockwave damaging everything in it's path. Deadly treat for the unwary. Uses an exsisting asteroid.
Type D: Offensive Holographic turret Much like the explosive but much more ambitious. Using generators, holograms, and a suit of electroinc warfare equipment it has the ability to mask itslelf to all sensors but mineral composition. It's is equipped with a medium turret and large smartbomb. Is only triggered by drones, miners or proximity. It has the ability to jam and web it's prey then tear it to pieces. Only type that can desciminate between friend or foe, suitable for defence and offence. Deployable, does not use an existing asteroid. VERY EXPENSIVE
This could liven up things a bit, there is a counter to all but it's up to the player to decide if the risk is great enough. Give recon somthing to do in both defence and offence. As to it being done in empire, ever hear of a bomb squad? Get caught deploying one in high sec space (you always get caught) you take a huge sec hit and get CONCORD'ed . --------------------------------------------- The opinions posted here are mine, and do not necessarily reflect the goals or opinions of my corperation or affiliates.
