I thought about this a bit...last June...and then realized that there wouldn't be a single roid left in empire space because a % of people would find it fun to destroy every rock, especially in systems for new players. If you want to destroy your enemies ore...mine it out. Then you make isk at the same time.
A simple solution to that is make the act outlawed in empire space, you recieve a huge faction drop and even can be refused docking priviledges. Think about it your destroying assets of the main factions in the game, that should come with severe penalties.

The 5% griefer population of this game would amuse themselves 24/7 with this idea. Lets not give the cyber-turds any more ways to implement their virtual sociopath plan for world domination.

people would just start doing it everywhere and in the end we wouldn't have any roids. Good idea in theroy but wouldn't work here.

There are definitly people who would spend all their time doing this, esp if it was a nice way to cause others pain. I suppose if it was to be put in there would have to be some limitations to how fast or how much can be destroyed. It is sort of hard to imagine how to make a system that wouldn't lead to wholesale destruction of deep space roid feilds.
I suppose the simple answer is make it hard enough to not be worth while to do for giggles but rewarding enough to do if its part of a larger strat. There must be a way to strike that kind of balence. I suppose that being able to essentially destroy asteriods 5 to 10 times faster than you can mine them (which is pretty slow) might work out. It would still take a good couple of hours to chew down a deep space belt that way. People would have to patrol the belts they claim and keep folks from destroying their resources. It would be nice to see some of the alliances actually having to defend all the area they claim in terms of mining rights. Anyone have any idea of how to balence this? How fast or slow would the destruction of the roids need to be for it to be used but not abused?

It's the exact same things as what Zombie did, you may not attack in "safe-areas" (empire/within sentry range) without loosing your ship.

Oddly enough I was thinking about this the other day after watching some program about historical genocide and the deliberate creation of famines to aid defeat of enemies.
In certain areas or favoured belts, high ores are in fairly limited supply. You could certainly cripple whole alliances / corps if you could pop all theirs lubbely roids. Not sure if this would be such a great a thing unless there was some way to reseed the 'crops' again.

I don't like this idea, simply because it's currently impossible to guard claimed space 24/7. If someone enters local to kill you, it's also very easy to hide at a safespot and wait until the enemy left local.

So, equip squads with scanners and the right defusal tools to travel along your mining expeditions to clean the belts, another profession created.
