Edited by: Chenrezig on 07/03/2009 09:46:57 I am on the fence about whether to pick up a new iMac or invest in a Mac Pro.
Aside from some sound and video editing, the most demanding thing I'll do on it is play EVE.
I'd like to be able to max out the graphics settings and effects in fleet fights, in premium graphics mode.
Here are three options:
iMac 24" ($2,199 USD) # 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo # 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB # 1.0TB Serial ATA Drive # NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 512MB
iMac 24" ($2,249 USD) # 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo # 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB # 1.0TB Serial ATA Drive # ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB
Mac Pro ($3,598 USD) # One 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon # 3GB (3x1GB) # 640GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s # ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB # One 18x SuperDrive # Apple LED Cinema Display (24" flat panel)
Do you think the iMac could handle maxed out graphics settings? If so, would the ATI 4850 be needed, or is the GeForce GT 130 enough?
Do you think the Mac Pro would be a major peroformance upgrade from the iMac?
Price is a concern but if the performance increase and lasting power of a Mac Pro would make it a worthwhile investment I'd be willing to fork over the extra grand.
Thanks for the advice!

I went with option #1, which is basically the stock 3.06ghz model. (I didn't order the graphics upgrade, I prefer to buy from the store and maintain the option to return, etc.)
iMac 24" ($2,199 USD) # 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo # 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB # 1.0TB Serial ATA Drive # NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 512MB
Installed the new premium Mac client today. No fleet fights yet, but doing simple tasks and travel I'm getting 55-80 FPS with everything but HDR and BLOOM maxed out. With HDR and BLOOM turned on (all graphics settings turned up as high as possible) I'm getting 35-55 FPS. Just thought I'd keep ya posted. Have fun!

More in depth performance report running in windowed mode at 1600x1000 resolution:
Sitting in station 100-150+ FPS (all settings max) Sitting in very quiet, empty space or traveling 50-80FPS (all settings max) Sitting in space in a group of approx 20 ships 35-45 FPS (all settings max) Running a level 4 mission 25-35 FPS (all settings max) Sitting at a POS in a fleet with 200 ships 0-15 FPS (all settings reduced to lowest possible) Full scale fleet engagement (1400 ships) 0 FPS, complete lag lock (all settings reduced to lowest possible)(some of this lag may be server lag)
My old PC with an Intel Pentium 4 (single core), 1.5GB RAM, and a Geforce 7600GS graphics card actually handles larger fleets better. With less ships around, the iMac performs better.
Less ships=iMac performs better than my old PC More ships=Old PC performs better than iMac

I haven't tried bootcamp. I've been trying to avoid buying a new copy of Windows. I did buy a copy of Windows XP for my PC. I wonder if I can install that or if there would be a problem with licensing. In any case, thanks for the input.
