Oops...fudge fingers...
Anyway, looking at the starting skill set for new characters created after march 10th - why do all races get shield operation? Surely those races with armour tanking tendencies would be better of with something else...? I know it's to start all races on an equal footing and all, but would an Amarr pilot (for example) ever bother training this skill, let alone want to start with it partially trained?
What are people's thoughts on this?
Here is current set on Sisi:
56,489 SP: Electronics 3 Engineering 3 Shield Op 2 Gunnery 2 Small Racial Gun 3 Mining 2 Mechanic 2 Naviagion 2 Science 3 Racial Frig 2 Spaceship command 3

Its not really a big deal though since its only at level 2 and you'll probably get hull upgrades in the tutorial.
But I agree, seems a little ill concieved. Could it be they never included it because thier is an explaination of hull upgrades in the tutorial?...

Does civ shield booster need it? Thats the first tanking mod you get regardless of race.

No, civ mods don't require any skills
If hull upgrades is in the tutorial then why not put shield op in one too? (for caldari at least) - the skill to use shield boosters is a waste of SP's for Amarr ships, and most Gallente too.
I would prefer to see it replaced with another more universally usefull/trained rank 1 skill like targeting for example...
Or give each race a relevent rank 1 skill (trained to level 2):
Shield operation for Caldari Afterbuner for Minmatar Repair systems for Amarr Drones for Gallente
That way every race is basiclly the same, but has a race relevent skill to get them started...Thoughts?

Doesn't really matter either way, you'll proberbly end up training it anyway. If you don't cross train to another race that uses the tanking class, you'll find a ship in your race that needs it anyway.

The tutorial missions also give out Repair systems.
They also explain both shield and armour tanking.
Maybe it's so you can try both?
Yes. Yes, I am. |

Shield OP at least does something for you, even if it's not much for an armor tank. I'd prefer Trade III instead. Everybody needs to place some orders now and then.

Shield operation is something EVERYBODY should have trained to level 4 or preferably 5. no exceptions. Yes, including armour tankers.
Why? Because it means that your ship has more effective Hitpoints, and that is a GOOD THING no matter how you prefer to tank. If you're an armour guy, it means you have a meatier buffer of ablative shields keeping your armour intact for a couple of precious seconds longer.
I've seen with my own eyes fights between two master-level armour tankers in near-identical ship setups which were won and lost because one of them had bothered to train Shield Operation, shield Management and Tactical Shield Manipulation to level 5, and the other hadn't bothered to touch them at all. - Verin "Stitcher" Hakatain. |
