So I go to my local Gamestop just to look around to see if there are any new releases I'd like to try out.
I'm walking around and I see it, a shiny new copy of Empire: Total War. As a huge fan of Rome: Total War, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to play yet another game where I get my jollies playing god and sending men to their ultimate demise on the battlefield. I go home, pop in the dvd to install it and I have to create a steam account for the first time install. Ok, no problem. It starts going through the install process after I start my Steam account and I get a popup. The Steam servers are too busy to handle my request. What. The. ****. Ok, no problem, start the disk over again and now I get the option to play it rather than install it. I think this is great, so I go ahead and click play instead of install.
The Steam servers are to busy to handle your request.
I just paid $50 for a game and now I have to wait until the servers are less busy to even install and play a game that I don't even have to be online to play.
Die in a fire Steam.

This is usually the point where people stop buying games and start pirating them. Why pay for it when you need to crack it first to be able to play it because their copy protection measures are too screwed up to do it the legit way. -------- Ideas for: Mining

Nah, Valve released UT3 for free for 48 hours on steam.
As you can see, they did not expect demand to be as high as it is.

My point is if I buy a game that doesn't require me to be online as eve does, I shouldn't have to wait for server load to decrease just so I can install it.

Update steam and try again.

Yes, I do love having to use steam to play offline games. E.g. Blue Shift, why do I need to use steam to play that? In before Ralara. |

So I overreacted a little bit, but I still miss the no-DRM days.
Or even the old DRM of "what's the 6th word of the 3rd paragraph in page 22 of the manual." And DOS.
It's working now though.

This is my first time using steam, so no I haven't figured it out. I'm worried that this hour long update that I have 27 minutes left on will have to be restarted if I close steam and try to play my new game.

Steam is pretty much the best DRM your going to get my friend. Its either a unfied system that registers all you games, lets you download and play them on ANY computer, and requires a server loogin every once in a while...
Or game specific registration that limits how many computers you can install the game on and eats up system resources while it links to servers and share information about your computer/network uasage.
Choose wisely

Reading comprehension ftw.... For most, possibly all games you buy from valve, ****ing steam needs to be in online mode to INSTALL that ****ing thing.
On Wednesday I bought l4d because it was considerably cheap - wednesday - that means no free UT ****. So I get home, looking forward to playing it. I put in the DVD, want to install - and BAMM servers are too busy to handle a ****ing request I wouldnt even want to create upon installing that thing. Alright, momma didnt raise no fool, I thought, and went to offline mode, tried again to install...
Guess what happened?
Took me half an hour before that ****ty thing would install.

If you're offline or you can't launch a game directly from Steam, you can still play the game. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common is where all non-Valve Steam games are generally stored, including E:TW, and you can launch the .exe directly from there regardless of what Steam is doing.
At least, I can! -----

How about a big middle finger to all these firms? Useless games by useless firms that deserve to burn to the ground with management shut in the building for the lulz and to teach everyone what happens to fools who try to rip their customers off.
You want quality? Buy the games, install the downloaded version. Who on earth wants to play GTA IV multiplayer? Who on earth wants to play Crysis multiplayer? GTA was fun for two days, Crysis was fun until the screenshots loaded.
Steam is a worthless service. When Steam ceases to exist so do your rights to play the games you have bought, now enjoy rebuying them. And who on this earth phones up a company to be given permission to install a game? People who do that are out their tree.
Also the majority of games made are worthless clones of past games. While it's hard to create something new all the time they just keep spitting the same nonsense out in the hope that the masses buy them. Why do you think they no longer make demo's? When people play their demo's and see what kind of a horrible, half finished, useless ****e they are releasing they, obviously, won't buy. What all of their stupidity has led them to is a massive decline in sales which started several years ago, alike the music and film industry.
So, what do you do facing declining sales and angry customers? You force DRM, lawsuits and more draconian measures onto them which makes them even more angry, which leads to even less sales. Then you blame those same customers of piracy when they refuse to accept your dominance and rule over them.
You see the point of the big middle finger?

I still fail to see why people hate Steam. You had a problem installing a game... yes, it sucks. But it was just a temporary setback (one I've never had with steam), and once installation is complete, Steam is done. You CAN play Steam games offline (you just need to log in every once in a while... I've gone MONTHS on offline Steam before), and you NEVER have to worry about CD keys or CD's once you've registered the game.
When DRM is mandatory (you can't tell me its not. I'm one of three people I know who buy games anymore, even when they can crack them, that I know, and I know a LOT of gamers), Steam is the best option you've got.
And if ANYONE has the right to complain, its me... Steam services don't work in Korea, so I can't even buy games on the thing. And I still love it. Thank you Valve! Now that I've defended you, can I have a HL:E3 demo? Or just some videos? Please???
Oh, and games arn't all rubbish. You gotta dig through the crap to find the good ones.

I would speculate that Steam is at the moment somewhat overhelmed as they offer free week of unreal 3 for anyone interested and that thing is not one of the lightweight downloads. 8+ gigs.
As far as Total War being steam download - I think it is not a bad idea at all. I quite like Steam distribution model - buy it once and then you can install it anywhere with internet connection for the rest of your life and dont have to worry about your DVD collection getting damaged or whatever.

Through 5 or 6 major game released on steam (HL2, Ep1, Orange Box, GTA4, L4D), I've never once had the servers be too busy to handle my request.

I completely agree with this. Steam's DRM is fair enough to where as long as I log in with my steam profile I can install as many copies of a game I would like. It's not that I want to but it's nice to know. Plus I like the face that you can redownload your game after an OS reinstall. I have all my steam games backed up and burned to DVD.

I love Steam, but not having control over what happens to your stuff is a little scary (mostly lazy admins who take several days to get an official patch to steam or botching release dates and not saying anything it for ages) plus the occasional hiccup (server is down for maitinence; you can't play anything online) is rather irritating.
Oh, and those games that come with install limits which don't get advertised until after you've bought them. Kind of defeats the point of having Steam at all...
BUT other than that I love it and pretty much buy all my games through it nowadays.

Actually I think there is remark about those when you look at that game page in steam. Not sure about them all ofc, but those I have looked (X3 and Spore for example) have line in the information 'Third party DRM' or something on those lines. As a principle I myself will not buy those games with draconinan DRM (like install 5 times and then rebuy the game) and I always read up about game in internet before actually buying it.

Steam's useless? i think not. An awful lot of games recently are determined to register you online before they'll let you play, at least steam is one integrated and relatively fast program with a few useful nobs on.

Actually valve states in their usage policy that they'll patch all games to work off-line if they ever collapse

Nobodies forcing you to buy the games at the end of the day. If you really think theyre that bad, make your own, and when you create a game like space empires which was created by a guy working in his basement and is available on steam, we'll see how long it takes you to sell out to EA who remake the game 50 times with marginally better graphics.
People in industry are in it for money, some at least try to do a decent job of earning that money. If you want a bad system look at EA's download system. I bought BF2142 awhile ago, then northern front came out and igot fedup of getting kicked from servers so i went out and bought it. Only to discover no disk! So i downloaded installed it and deleted the intallaion files. A year later i build a new PC and try to D/L BF2142:NF again only to find that i cant because EA want you to fork out again for the download after ~3 months.
Steam might not be the greatest thing ever, but considering how borked the market is atm, its as good as it can be.
