There is PVE in Eve. Although people can certainly interfere with your PVE to a great extent, which I think is a good thing because private instances for missions would just kill the kind of player interaction and contradict the "you are never truly safe" aspect of the game that makes it so special among the current crop of MMO's.
I think that particular characteristic is of critical importance and might be called the core doctrine of Eve. The reason NPC Corp mission runners who never leave high sec are looked down upon is that they are going out of their way to avoid player interaction and subvert risk. This is like buying the new street fighter game and never leaving the "training mode." Isn't the whole point of the npc opponents just to train you to play against your friends or with random people at an arcane?
I always have seen the lack of challenging / interesting PVE in this game as a reflection of the attitude of CCP. It seemed obvious to me after a month of playing that this game was special because of the PVP elements (including industrial, exploration and combat) and that PVE elements were there as resources / funding to fuel PVP (be it ore for miners to compete with on the market or rats for combat pilots to purchase ammo and new ships with).
The next expansion is the first credible attempt to make interesting PVE content since I began playing. It looks like it will be very fun and even someone like myself will be participating in wormhole exploration. Still, if you compare this game to any other MMO you will see that 99% of the work goes into correcting PVP issues and enhancing the PVP experience.
In Blizzard's market-dominating MMO there are PVE-based patches very frequently. New areas, equipment and quests appear all the time. Part of that is that they can actually afford to build new environments frequently while a smaller company cannot. Still, the core of Blizzard's MMO is more of a balanced approach to PvP and PVE (although some would argue they clearly release far more PVE content than PVP content).
Will CCP ever actually say this is not a game for PVE-focused players? Of course not. They may no longer be totally ignoring the people who see missions as their end-game, but beyond that they have always recognized that customers are customers. If someone enjoys the missions that much they are welcome to stay.
However, to be fully honest I feel somewhat sad for people like that. When I'm on my npc corp alts I usually encourage the players who have lived in NPC corps all their lives to reach out and meet some other people in game. Sometimes people tell me they have 9 kids and can only play 15 minutes at a time. To them, I concede they are probably better off alone.
Then there are those who are just ignorant of what is outside. I talked to a character over a year old who asked me what the differences are between player and non-player corps. When I explained you could declare war, own stock, become ceo and even take sovereignty in space he was absolutely dumbfounded. I've had people eve-mail me later with questions and eventually they grow into interesting people in the Eve community. Then again, a huge chunk of the NPC corps are just alts who want to farm isk so their mains can have fun. That's different entirely. |

EVE IS a PvP game. Everything is PvP. Miners compete to mine more than the others. Builders seek to build more stuff more cheaply, everyone seeks to buy as low as possible and sell as high as possible with the more rabid traders undercutting each other as soon as they can.
You are always engaged in combat against other players, and EvE itself. ALWAYS

Also, it's always funny to see the arrogant *****s crowd overreact and tell CCP how their own game should be made and played.
