There are some (for example, the Orion Nebula just below the middle of Orion's belt) but they certainly don't show up very well, and they certainly don't take up almost all of your night view. In fact, I would guess they would take up less than .01% of it.

Yeah, dynamic lighting would be nice, so some systems activate little torch lamp things on your ship, nice and dark, like the dark side of a moon/planet

From earth there are no nebulae that appear as more than a tiny smudge, certainly you cant see coloration, all the pictures we have seen so far has been taken with a telescope staring into space for days at a time, just to get one picture..
I certainly would'nt mind having EVE's background generated using the galaxy's stars in their relative positions, with some general volumes of nebulae, I am certain it is possible without overloading any of the more recent computers or graphic cards :P plus, it would give a unique view from any system.

i heartily agree with whoever said they should take a lesson from Freelancer on how the atmospheric/nebula effects *should* be done..
and a few dark systems would be nice..
not to mention *gasp*
planets you can LAND on!!! :P

some systems are half dark grey half blue
but i think the special thing about eve are the nebulas, it may be because eve is such a young galaxy that there are nebulas everywhere

Eve background nebula are horrible... and black backrounds everywhere is boring. Solution? Revamp the nebula look!
Why can't the background look like it does here (more dramatic colors): http://www.eve-online.com/screenshots/29082000/#
Especially the shot with 2 raptors (bottom row). --------------

Originally by: StormDragoness Have none of you guys played X2? you've really missed something then, backdrops are for the most part unique and very realistic looking, without being in your eyes constantly, they appear as though they are far away and not close up, sure EVE could'nt possibly have a unique backdrop for each and every system, but surely, a bit of consistency, say a constellation has very similar backdrops, but shifts slowly towards another towards the edges, but I'd say redo the backdrops in EVE, the impact of a well balanced background will be an overall better game, people will enjoy flying through it, especially if there is something new to discover as well.
Heh... X2... wow
It's like a visual orgasm - so many pretty colours and flashing lights. The graphics programmer there obviously found a book on DirectX effects, read all of it and thought "Hell yeah... we can include ALL of this - with as much of it on screen at once" The result? It's like flying through an oil slick with all the purdy colours.
I much prefer EVEs 'realistic' gritty graphics, still pretty but understated. But X2 is good as well.
