Now, I may just be a former WoW***, but it seems to me that the devopers are doing everything they can to make this game sombre. The music and the chronicles are depressing, and the trailers don't even try to be very exciting. What's the deal here, this game could use some more bombastic music to go with pvp, maybe some faction music for FW forays. It's like a regular game's soundtrack, but missing all the battle music. And the chronicles, it's nice that they explain so many different facets of life in EVE, but from most that I've read, it seems they dumped all the emos and criminally insane into EVE and then threw away the key. I'm not saying it should be like Hollywood, with cheesy one-liners and paper-thin plot, but it doesn't have to be depressing either.

Eve is this kind of depresive space, where nobody can die, but they keep shooting each other again and again just for the fun of it :).

Crime. Hate. Racism. Murder. War. Corpses. Immortality. Lost. Collapsed wormholes. Angry citizen uprisings. Politics. Spies. Pirates. Cannibals. Crazy drones. Slave labor. Dark. Grit. Cruelty. Violence.
What's not to like?
I prefer EvE. It doesn't paint a pretty picture. Reality sucks, and in many ways EvE is very, very real.
Best not to make light of the true evils of human nature. And I think it helps, in it's own way. Not only is it entertaining, but when you meet someone genuinely nice ... you appreciate it.

it's that, and that the game is set in a somewhat dystopian future, so bright an cheery doesn't quite fit. this is gritty and brutal.

You could play Star Wars Galaxies. That's cheerful. I mean, they just hosted an event with flying ewoks and love bows.

If anything, EVE isn't bleak enough. Some of the Solar System backgrounds make me feel like I am trapped in a My Little Pony cartoon.

Early groundwork and development was all in the hand of Icelandic people. Hence, EVE is cold, cruel and harsh.
I wouldn't call it depressing, but then again I grew up in the island of eternal twilight (except that month where it's eternal sunlight) so I'm bred to withstand the inherent depression in a cold, dark and gloomy atmosphere.

The music on EVE is so generic and it should never be discussed. I'm surprised when CCP mentions new music as a part of some new patch. I could do a better job and I would like to if anyone is interested. It does nothing for or against the game. However, when it comes to soundscapes and wallpaper music, EVE online's music leans more towards to the sci-fi equivalent of soft jazz.
