OK, my main rig runs premium Eve with all the fixins, but the laptop I sometimes take with me on trips is crap and could barely run the classic client. So, now I'm screwed while on the road, right? NO! This guy (Lenhaj) on the whining thread in general mentioned a piece of software called "3D Analyze" that tricks Eve into thinking that your computer supports SM2. Well, I tried it and it works! Good enough to change skills and chat, anyways! Here's what I did:
1. Go download 3D-Analyze. Google the name and grab it. It's freeware, btw, so don't freak out. Extract it to a folder somewhere.
2. Put a batch file called eve2.bat or something like that in your root eve directory that has just "C:\progra~1\CCP\EVE\bin\ExeFile.exe" inside it. Use notepad or edit or whatever.
3. Start up 3d-analyze and hit the "select" button, and navigate the file thingie to the batch file you created.
4. checkmark all of the boxes under "hardware limits(cap bits)" and "ANTI-DETECT MODE". For good measure, checkmark the "skip pixel shader version 2.0" box, as well.
5. Hit the run button, and after a time, Eve will start up without complaining about your crappy gpu! For the love of God, hit esc and turn everything to the lowest settings now!
6. Enjoy playing Eve at 2 FPS on a computer never meant for 3d gaming!
I hope this helps some people!

Oh, and my laptop is a Toshiba Satellite a-10 2.4 ghz, with onboard Intel 82852 graphics and 16mb of VRAM. DirectX support is listed as "7.0/SM0.0".

Thanks for the post, but it didn't work, at least not for me.
Also, it changed my browser home page. I hope that's all it did when I ran it

these settings work for geforce 3 ti200, game runs fine with no noticable lag. Have yet to try PVP as server went offline for scheduled downtime at 11:00 Euro as I was testing.
Seems CCP just blocked certain older cards with hardware detect. Game still runs if you hide your card from them. Havent checked some ingame 3d models for ships yet to see where it whites out. Will do a report on what works and what doesnt. Should allow people to at least skill their accounts thou.
by the way that client doesnt mess with the broswer functionality if you download from official site and is freeware, and doesnt change anything with the CCP files so isnt a breach of EULA.

thanks guys. i'm technical idiot and it took me some time to get it working. it does work :)
it's great to know that there are some actually solving a problem rather than barking at people having laptops.
graphics look like mid-1995, but i can live with that. it's not representation, but content, which makes eve worth playing. you saved ccp an account paying :)

Hey yeah as I said, its a temporary fix that just allows you to skill, undock and move about etc so you can get into the game and do the essentials whilst exploring a second hand gfx card option or a new pc etc. I have tried a few things in game and there is some lag once you are out of the stations. I found that NPC and player ships rendered as solid black with no textures and asteroids dont look right either, just blobs, but the basic engine is functional. Stations and Gates partially render but you get no effects other then sound. Its not great and doesnt look as good as the old classic version but will hopefully stop a few rage quits if people are still skill etc whilst looking at a more permenant option, so thanks very much to Surly Bob for posting this tool.
I've been looking at a cheap AGP card as the ebay auctions are going mental at the moment...
anyone got any ideas on if this one would be compatible with the new build of eve? and if its value for money? I have no idea about gfx cards as I've not needed to upgrade in a decade. GeForce 6200 256MB DDR2 HDTV/DVI (AGP)

As vargrh said. I can now use my crappy latop to change skills and set market orders. Great find!
I would not bother with a 6200 card tbh. It was really low end when it was introduced (5 years ago). It does support sm 3.0 but it has seriously bad performance.
I'd go for something a little more decent;

Mmm... X1k series... I had an X1950 Pro for a good while at the start of the year last year, before building a new system, with a Phenom and the brand-new, at the time, 3870X2. Unfortunately, the thing died shortly before getting said system, which was the prompt for getting the fresh computer. I've since made the jump to a PhII 940 and 4870 1GB and handed the older build to family.
Hm. My work computer here has an X1300Pro... It seems to not have any trouble with Apocrypha, though I really haven't tried anything serious with it, since I AM at work, and shouldn't be playing.
Sorry for the ramblings.. ---- "Sounds like a bad case of pikal envy, if you ask me."

that 6200 could work but as said is an old core, now a 6600 would be fine even upto 7600 in AGP. if you want the best in the GF6 series look for a 6600 (nv43 A1-A2) this version didnt have its extra pipelines laser cut unlike the NV43-A3/A4. infact the NV43-A1/A2 runs a 6800 core.
7600 AGP are also cheap and a slight improvement on the 6600. better still you could try looking for a NV6800gt.
another note, you need too be careful some Nvidia card state 512mb but infact only have 256 mb installed, these cards use your computers memory too beef up the cards memory and in turn means your machine will struggle.
so too top it off a 6200 if your totaly broke and want too play with minimum settings. the 6600 -6800 they come fairly cheap and the later 6800gt will allow a few settings. the 7600 upwards is your best bet with SM3 (shader model 3)will allow some fancy graphics with half decent framerates.
im not sure but check with laptops manual and website, some laptops were able too have cutdown gfx cards installed that was made for laptops. like i said im very unsure on this infomation so check laptop manuals-websites-interweb.
be careful buying second hand hardware, they may say it works and when you recieve item it could be borked or fried. dont overclock secondhand graphics cards theres a good chance its near the end of its life and teh reason it was sold on.

What kind of graphics card do you have? Try to play with the settings based on the capabilities of the card.

you can adjust vram on those, because it just allocates a block of system RAM to be used for graphics. ___________________________________

Make sure the batch file contains a link to the ExeFile.exe in the bin folder and not the Eve.exe in root. Also I found the full directory listing didn't work. i.e. C:\Program Files\... must be C:\Progra~1\... as OP said.

Edited by: Captain Plumbo on 12/03/2009 15:21:21 I can cornfirm that this works works on a really ****ty graphics card;
tried it on a XP2000+/512Mb ram/Geforce4 MX4000 64Mb
The gfx card is basically a geforce2 MX (geforce2 was released 9 years ago )
As Vargrh says, you can change skills and play the market with no problems. The basic engine works, so you can mine/fly around normally - just don't expect shiny graphics

Did you link the exefile.exe in the /bin folder in the .bat file? I don't think this works if you link the eve.exe in the eve install dir.

Edited by: Bunni Lebowski on 12/03/2009 15:53:46 I am having difficulty following your instructions or figuring out how this software works. First of all - you left out the part where you install the software. Then, you don't (and they don't) explain how running a blank batch file will somehow magically start up eve? Do I save the batch file after i make the changes? If so, what points it to the EVE.exe?
When I click "Run" I get the following error: "Could not copy C:\Documents...\ForceDLL.dll to C:\Program Files\...\EVE\ForceDLL.dll !"
Quote: 2. Put a batch file called eve2.bat or something like that in your root eve directory that has just "C:\progra~1\CCP\EVE\bin\ExeFile.exe" inside it. Use notepad or edit or whatever.

To the two above: are you running Vista? 3D analyzer will try to copy some temporary files to the directory you placed the eve.bat file. This probably means you will need administrator rights. (I am not familiar with Vista, running XP myself).

We can't link exefile.exe directly because 3D Analyze creates a few temporary files in the directory where the linked file is. EVE checks for unknown files on startup and refuses to start because of this, thus the need for the .bat file to point to exefile.exe.

OK, I checked the temporary files that 3D Analyze copies to the linked .bat directory, and Force.dll is indeed one of them. The error you get is because 3D Analyze is not permitted to copy/create files in that directory. Are you logged in as administrator?

Edited by: Alejan Gerakh on 12/03/2009 17:49:34 Excuse us- sometimes we computer geeks forget not everyone who plays games can geek it up like us, and we omit or overlook certain steps... But the general gist seems to make sense, to me. Batch files are old-school 'Shortcut' files, in some respects. By telling it to open the ExeFile.exe, it is acting as a remote opener for the game. According to what I see mentioned, this is important to keep mess to a minimum and avoid an 'oh noes I'm being hacked' response from the EVE client.
I suspect some options for this program need to be tailored to the card being used, but I'm not entirely clear on the specifics. All I could recommend, myself, would be a little trial and error. Scientific Method FTW.
Also, I would recommend perhaps putting the batch file somewhere else? Does it have to be in the root EVE directory? ---- "Sounds like a bad case of pikal envy, if you ask me."
