They go out into the real world and realise they don't have super powers, they're not some world dominating genius, they're not a super stud and generally in the scheme of things a stranger in the street doesn't give a toss who you are.
The realisation hits that the fittest bird in the school isn't going to look at you twice no matter how cool geeks are in the modern era and they go around killing women because they can't get laid.
If that applies to anyone here have a wash lose the computer speak set your sites lower and be nice to women and you won't have to sit brooding at home with your tackle in your hand staring at your toy AK47. /start sig I love old characters that post 'I've beeen playing the game four years' when I know their account has been sold on. /end sig |

I wouldn't rule out a psychotic break. Perhaps he developed schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder, or any of a number of other disorders that cause him to "go crazy". By most accounts, he was acting fairly normally up until shortly/right before this happened. So I wouldn't be surprised if something snapped in him that triggered this. Of course, having easy access to guns didn't help, but I doubt anything beyond his own brain chemistry can be blamed for it.

What's wrong with the world? In my opinion the social stigma resting on mental health and the poor treatment of people in the early stages of developing any disorders. Mind and body are one and affect each other so why so many medical professionals still don't take it seriously is beyond me. Although the blame goes to anyone who took notice of the boy's strange behavior but chose to ignore it.
Edit: News stating now the boy had been putting depressed messages on his netlog for a good while now.

The world is a continuum of probabilities. Unfortunately, sooner or later someone will become crazy. Then there is the existence of of hand held kinetic weapons designed to kill human beings with high efficiency. Accidents will happen.
As regards human nature, think about the millions of students who didn't run amok yesterday. School killings are a non-issue that tell you nothing about the human condition except that it's possible. --------------- ∞ TQFE

And here we go again in the news and the politics, superficial conclusions and analytical abortions. No one even tries to find out what motivated the kid to start shooting or how he became like that. There's more to a life than a game or a gun.
There is no interest in a real discussion from the political side. It'd uncover the neglect and rot failed policies in education and social motivation they produced. It'll all be pompous populist speeches demanding more control, more restrictions, more laws, less freedom, as always. And then nothing of significance is done until the next time. -------- Ideas for: Mining

I was not, because it had already happened several times previously. When I saw it on the news, my reaction was "Oh, another one. Wow, mega bodycount this time. That will be a hard act to follow." Most people think the phenomenon began that day. It did not. Maybe a certain movie helped that false perception along. I bet the killers would be flattered though.

What is wrong with the world? 'Western' people believing they are superiour to the rest of the world. Thousands of people die everyday in far worse conditions and some school shooting gets attention.
Want to see what's wrong with the world? Go to Afghanistan, Iraq, Burma, Indonesia, Somalia, Gaza, Zimbabwe, etc. You will realise that that school shooting is nothing compared to the mass amount of suffering that goes on in the world. The only reason people feel it's so bad is because 'Westerners' believe they are better than everyone else and deserve attention rather than the millions who have died so far in Somalia.

Of course, but normality is a relative thing. Some guy taking a car and spraying bullets around the streets before a stand-off with police is news in the US and EU, but when it happens in South Africa, it is a case of "that's not news, you would expect it to happen over there." That is the way we evaluate these things.

There is undoubtedly media hype, but there are also differences in perceived value.

lol I'm a geek as well mate but there is a line.
There is normal geeks like us and there is blurry line geeks. There are a lot of those in EVE and lurking across the internet. Too much internet and not enough RL skews perception. You don't have as many sensory inputs which means people cna mess with your mind more easily.
The key is balance.

This one kinda fits the emo nice internet kid though with an unhealthy interest in guns and chatrooms.
I would understand it more if a sports protege did it, can put it down to pressure not social inadequacy.

Uh...
I think it is just a mental health issue. It seems he had received some treatment. Figures. If something like that is going to materialise in a person, it usually shows up in their late teens or early twenties. It is like a developmental hurdle, most make it, some don't.

Agreed fully,
But you will find due to a large social stigma applied to Geeks or anything of intellectual value. That social rejection is normal, and it some case`s accepted.
Actually what should be happening is the reversal, geeks are very useful social tools. they are and can act like the glue between class divides, they can keep the lower class and those less fortunate with up-to-date information about the world around them. As well as social trends that are happening. while increasing the intelligence of less privileged. In such case`s like myself (wanting to open a fab lab) one would also find that they can increase a small community`s well being.
The Fab lab offering increased fundamentals of basic science and applied maths (keeping the core work force updated and useful to employers)
Offing those less fortunate the ability of development and creation. This leads onto invention, invention means new technology. which means a new marketable good, which in turn leads onto new jobs which require technical trained staff (see fab lab and colleges) which also means greater pay.
To right off the need of a geek into days modern society is damaging to a society.

Actually I think it's the Conservation of Ninjitsu in effect. Except in this case it's the Conservation of Humanity principle. Basically the less the amount of people that are killed the more you identify with individual personalities and feel sympathy than an enourmous amount of faceless people who you're more apt to see as inhuman. Its basic human psychology, not isolated simply to those humans in the west. -- Distortion| Distortion 2 Preview |

It's that black and white thinking that is wrong with the world. From your view point people aren't allowed to care about anything. There is always something more eyepoppingly tragic and disastrous to feel guilty about instead. If your friend's mom dies do you rant about the billions of moms that died before his so stop feeling sad?

Yes the Hutu's Murdered Tutsie's because every single westerner is self-centered. The genocide in Darfur is because Westerners think they are better then others. Terrorism exists because westerners are all high and mighty.
Biased anyone?!
Howabout a vauge, shallow arguement devoid of examples, evidential or even illistrationary proof? TO say that all the worlds problems are because the west advanced as a society faster then the "east" and the "south" and the "north" makes you the kind of person you are trying to make me out to be.
SO in return, I blame YOU for the worlds problems. ______________________________ The Tulip is AMAZED |
