Allow drone like probes that can be sent or left at locations and return telematry/scanner data.
Example:
I want to leave send a probe that will return to me scanner information at the next jumpgate. So I take a Probe out of my drone bay and send it to the next Jumpgate. When it arrives it pops up a scanner window of the objects there and I can view the results.
If the probe is destroyed then no window is desplayed or only part of the information is displayed.
A probe can only be used within the same system.
A probe only move at a maximum 1 au/second.

this would be a cool idea, but would make pirating a lot harder. Which would mean it isn't fair :P

Its a great idea . It would allow players to chose their tactics before they arive to the gate and would be able to avoid beeng traped in a cage of pirats helpless.

For pirates I think they should be able to:
o Destroy the probe before it finishes its scan (probes will have little or no armor so 1 shot should suffice)
o Jam the probe using existing technologies
o Deploy their own drones that hunt down other probes (basically add an option to scout drones to patrol for probes and kill of sight)
A PC who sends a probe to forward or leaves a probe behind may get it destroyed by NPC pirates or PC pirates...
Once a PC leaves a system without retrieving a probe their probe goes 'dead' and can be picked up by anyone just like any other drone.
What do you guys think?

Scan resolution and signature would need serious thought though, especially if you want to give alert campers a chance to destroy it before it sends its data back.
Would be cool if players could hack a "weak" probe so it sends back false info. ie no ships at gate, or 1 indie.

Why not just jamming/sensor dampening it? If it can't see, the data is sent back as "Nothing Found", assuming you can lock and jam it in time.

This is much like the orginal tradewars "probes" where you can send the probe to a certain system and scan it. IF ccp ends up turning off 0.0 space so that you can't show the number of people in space implementing probes would be an excelent idea. You could have short range probes that you could send to the next system. These probes would be small. All the way to long range probes that you could send up to 50 jumps or something... With the long range probles being much larger in size and cost more of course. Probes would not be re-usable. But like a frigate should be able to hold liek 50 small problems. etc etc. B.s. would hold like 100 small, 50 med, or 25 large. or something like that. like the drone spaces we have now, IT would be a new BAY. like cargo bay, drone bay, probe bay.

Don't think we need to have a separate bay, just make it work like a specialized drone, that way it wouldn't require too much programming and development work.
Usability:
1. Open Drone bay 2. Launch Probe 3. Right click on Probe in Drone Menu that opens up a 'Warp to' locations in the current system (like the square in the upper left next to the system name) 4. Wait til probe gets their and starts scanning 5. Window pops up, just like scanner window but with Probe name in the top 6. You can view the scanner results just like if you were there
NOTE: You could skip step 3 and have it scan in the current location and then YOU go somewhere else.
There are so many different types of probes and those specialized for certain operations.
Example:
Probes that warp faster than normal Probes that work at longer ranges Probes that automatically run away from hostile ships Probes that have a higher than normal signature (harder to scramble/decript)
Additionally I think Pirate should be able to be warned:
"Warning, incoming probe" like 5 seconds before it arrives. That way they can do something about it.
The probe should take like 15-20 seconds to complete a scan before sending its data back, this way Pirates can do something about them.
Also a pirate maybe able (don't know how), to get a lock on the person who sent the probe and be able to warp to them??? Might have to be a special module or skill?

Perhaps the pirate(s) can right click on the probe in their 'Scanner' window and have several options like:
o Jam/Scramble Probe (must have appropriate modules) o Target Probe (then they could destroy it with a gun) o Trace Probe (this would pop-up a window with a signature of the person who sent the probe and the pirate could then jump or just query that person)

You do know that you can spare a little extra time and send an alt ahead of you, right?
And hey, ya want Probes? Take said alt and train up his Minmatar frigate skill. -----------

I would think that if a pirate could jam the signal they could just as well cloak...
Not like the probe could find them then.
Or maybe the probe only have a range of say 60 km? I don't know. What do you think.
