Edited by: Erigal on 12/03/2009 08:48:47 Hi,
I have previously been running the Linux client. I had used the setup utility that came with it to set 2 window mode instances with custom res so they took up most of my 1920x1200 desktop each, with no corners cut off and I could switch back and forth between them.
Now with the Windows Premium client in Wine I'm having trouble getting the same to work. I fiddled around with "wine explorer /desktop 0,1600x1100 ..." but this doesn't seem to work very well for me. I can still only have one client in fullscreen mode, when I launch the second desktop with /desktop 1,1600x1100 and lauch eve on it it just goes black screen. I also can't set a custom res anymore cause they moved t he settings into a binary file. That really, really, really ****es me off when people do that. "Leave it the **** alone!", best choice is 1400x1050 :(
Running both instances in window mode on 2 desktops or both on one and performance is extremely poor and they are extremely unstable. Last attempt I was getting 10fps when I get 40fps with 1 in fullscreen and the sound crashed giving me a loud droning tone instead of sound.
Any pointers?
Cheers Paul

This first:
EVE wiki multi client setup
There are a few other ways to achieve this if this solution doesn't work, and one of those is to create another wine instance ex: .wine1 and do it that way, but on my rig the wiki solution is working just fine. Another issue may be that you are trying to run in "fullscreen" and that is still an issue with wine at this point with EVE. Run EVE "fullscreen" in a wine "window" and have the window match the desktop screen resolution. Then you can run one client in one virtual desktop and another in a second virtual desktop and switch that way. (or have each in a twinview config one client per lcd.)

Hmm. That's more or less how I was attempting to do it. Except that I made 2 complete copies of Eve, which I probably didn't need to make.
I only attempted to run both in full screen (on 2 different Wine Desktops mind) once, but even though the second instance was on a separate desktop it would only show a black screen.
Trying them in windowed mode and they were both very slow and the sound crashed. This might have been due to my internet being overloaded and the sound thing a transient, so I'll have another go tonight or tomorrow when I get home from work.
Is there any solution to the lack of custom resolution anywhere? 1400x1050 is too small on my monitor and the next res up is 1600x1200, which means I miss the bottom of the window or need to start hiding my KDE dual task bar (which was a fiddly thing to get working the way I wanted).
One option I tried with limited success with the Linux client was to use 2 X servers, CTRL+ALT+F7 and CTRL+ALT+F8 each with an eve full screen on it. I can't remember but I think it was very unstable like this. Maybe the Wine version will work better that way.... not sure if I'd want it though, X screen switch time is a good few seconds - too long.

Try doing 2 things. Change the desktop name to something more like eve1 instead of simply 0. Second, try running native resolution. In the official client, running in native resolution caused you to not be able to see the whole screen due to top and bottom bars, but you won't have that issue in wine. |

What do you mean by "native" resolution?
If I run it in my KDE desktop resolution then I wont be able to fit the window on the screen. I assume you mean something different.

Edited by: Erigal on 14/03/2009 12:36:21 Well, I have managed to get the 2 clients running on virtual desktops with 50fps each (though I suspect my NVidia settings have reverted back to low Anti-Aliasing as when I had that maxed I was getting 5-10fps).
Both clients have a virtual desktop and run in it full screen. Downside is I can only run them in 1400x1050 :( I'd much prefer 1600x1100. Can't have everything I suppose.
Outstanding problems are things I seen in the native client.
Bad aliasing on what appears to be transparent or highly specular effected textures, causes a shimering effect, but it looks awful.
Texture corruption: After a period of playing occasionally the texture of one or both clients gets corrupted; rainbows appearing in ship textures, chat window text appearing in space, particularly in the warp tunnel, gas clouds in missions actually have textures of modules or ships or text windows. I can live with this, but it would be good to get it fixed.
Locking up ALSA on exit: Quite often when I quit EVE the soundcard is left locked causing any subsequent application to fail when it tries to open the ALSA device.
Both clients lockup when one is exited: quite annoying, but quiting one client causes both Wine virtual desktops to lock up.
Mouse wheel scroll dies: while the mouse wheel continues to work for camera zoom it stops working for scrolling up/down in windows. Seems to come and go.
Modifier key stickiness: Occasionally the CTRL key or SHIFT keys will become stuck on, resulting in some rather confusing behaviour. It's easily fixed by pressing all the modifier keys a few times.
I can live with most of these, but does anyone have solutions?

Did you try sticking the 1600x1100 resolution in your xorg.conf MetaModes line ? This may not fool X and EVE because it's a weird resolution but it's worth a try
Option "MetaModes" "1600x1200,1600x1200; 1600x1200,NULL; 1600x1100; 1400x1050; 1152x864; 1024x768; 800x600; 640x480"

i still recommend this, i've been using multiple clients for 3.5+ years now, running from 1 copy of eve still quadruples or more your chance of "settings corruption" which is a major PITA

Tried something like that a while ago. My 2nd account is no longer active but it worked for me when i tried this way.
Most of the problems disappeared, when I copied my eve directory and my wine directory.
Then set your wine directory in the command line like this:
env WINEPREFIX="/home/user/.wine1" wine "C:\\Wine\\Eve1\\eve.exe" env WINEPREFIX="/home/user/.wine2" wine "C:\\Wine\\Eve2\\eve.exe"
Works well for me. Both run in a compiz cube in a Wine virtual desktop, so i can switch with ctrl+alt+left/right
