Oh and WHY IS IT that I cannot put a tamperproof THERMONUCLEAR seal on my can and laugh violently when my 10mil safety feature blows up disintegrating that ore thief... Maybe have some hacking skills to disable it or something. I would pay 10 mil or maybe even 100mil if I could do this.
I donĘt get it.

I don't get it why you HAVE to mine in an UNSECURED jetcan, then it's still YOU complaining about the "side-effects".

You are still not getting the point. I know as a BS pilot that I can put a whole mess of smarbombs in the jetcan and explode them at will (if the game mechanics let me) Whats to stop me from loading a jetcan with explosives and blowing ore stealers to hell? This should be something we can do in game.

it is something you can do in-game.
Load up a bunch of smartbombs on your ship and one mining laser. Punt out a jetcan and wait for local ore thieves. When they flip the can, smartbomb them back to the stone age.
(I take no responsibility for any resulting concord action, but it WILL kill the ore thief.)
Alternately, STOP JETTISONING YOUR ORE INTO SPACE YA NINNY!

Again. I can put a nuke in my garbage can and he would die. I should be able to do this in game.

Edited by: Alora Venoda on 13/03/2009 22:59:12 Jetcans are obsolete now that we can use Orcas to deposit ore directly into without any cans at all. If you are a newer player and/or don't have a hauler alt, you may want to try asking around your corp if anyone who has an Orca will let you mine into it. Also, their gang bonuses will help you mine more ore. ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ Take away the risk and it would make flying around in space utterly pointless.
Take away the flying around part and you make EVE into a space themed spreadsheet application. |

The backstory reason is that jetcans are put together from scrap materials. They are not sturdy, which is why they only last about 2 hours. This is why you can't fit security devices on the jet can - all it is a giant, floating cube with scrap metal for walls!
If you actually wanted to pay money for a security device, the game provides you with Giant Secure Containers - not nearly as large as a jet can, but if they are properly configured, they are nigh impossible to steal from. The only way they can be stolen from is if someone guesses your password. And if you use a random 6 digit password, that's going to be very difficult for them to do.
Next thing - the reason why you can't booby-trap jet cans in the game, is probably for the same reason why you can't booby-trap your garbage can in real life. It's incredibly illegal and will get you charged with murder and/or manslaughter and then consequently thrown in prison for a long time. If you did this in the game, CONCORD would not be pleased with you.

Hey you. Yeah you. At CCP. I want a more secure option for mining. What? No, not the myriad options available to me currently. The one I want. You know. The one that requires no tradeoff from me, and totally screws up the other player. Yeah, that one. I can't see any reason why this shouldn't be in the game, I can't see what harm it would do to me. -

Yep. Pretty much.
That, and there are NO remotely detonable explosive devices in the game. Well, not anymore. Apparently there used to be mines but they were taken out.
So no mechanic exists to "booby trap" something. I agree it seems logical, but doesn't fit within game mechanics.
That and, as was mentioned before, a jetcan is basically garbage. Stop storing valuable stuff in the garbage heap. ---- Fix the Wardec System! |

Oh, let's also not forget that the use of jet cans as a means of ore storage was an unintended gameplay mechanic! CCP never wanted us to use them that way. It's not an exploit, but CCP isn't going to make it easier for you to do this.
If anything, I would like CCP to introduce larger sized secure containers - ones that can hold a couple cycles worth of ore from a Hulk.

Now I have to ask. Before jetcans, how did people haul ore off? You can't directly deposit ore into a hauler and my hulk pulls enough ore per 144 second cycle to nearly fill a giant secure container. With those at a minimum of 5,000m apart and the fact that you can't tractor unanchored secure containers, you'd need pretty much one hauler for every two hulks.
It would seem to me that jetcans would invariably become the option immediately upon release (whenever that was).
That said, to the OP: Orca is the only way to mine nowadays. With a little effort you can gather up half a billion to buy one. ___________ I reserve the right to be wrong.

You'd be surprised how many ore theifs/can flippers dont check info on the containers before approaching.. Simply renaming your jetcan to "Large Secure Container [CORPTAG]" is almost a foolproof way of fooling the fools. The saddest thing is that it actually works.

Parries with Hulk; GSC filled in less than one cycle and not enough lows to make cargo expanders useful as two expanders only allow for one extra cycle.
Solo mining has always been gimped and those who are unfortunate enough not to have corpmates online when they decide to log in are forced to use jetcans. Even with an Orca around to tractor them, jetcans have to be used cos an Orca can't be everywhere at once for the pilots to access the corp hold.
We've been asking for bigger secure cans for a long time and CCP have ignored us for a long time. Instead of useful things that are needed for the game, they'd rather invest their resources in pretty graphics and fluff.

^^^ What he said^^^
"I can fly.. I'm a pilot.."
Orca is so much fun. If theres noone around you can launch your mining barge from maintenance bay, board it and then target the orca. Targeting the orca locks it. Not even corp members can board it while its targeted. (not that any of my corp can fly one yet, theres one working on it and begging to fly mine. I said HELL FREAKING NO!!)
Anyways you can still access the corp hanger even when theres no pilot.
If you try this please let me know where at so I can bring a freind with ECM bursts. So I can steal it from you hehehe.
